He married Frances Miller in 1824 and began a legal practice. During this time, he met Thurlow Weed, a powerful political figure. Weed became a vital ally for Seward throughout his career. They both believed that government should invest in infrastructure like roads and canals. Seward’s early political steps included joining the Anti-Masonic Party. He was elected to the New York State Senate in 1830. This role allowed him to advocate for penal reform and other social changes.

Seward later joined the Whig Party, which favored legislative action to develop the nation. He was elected governor of New York in 1838 and again in 1840. As governor, he used his power to advance the rights of Black residents. He signed laws that provided more opportunities for them. However, his firm stances against slavery made him a target of hatred in the Southern states. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1849.

By 1860, Seward was a leading figure in the newly formed Republican Party. He was considered a top candidate for the presidential nomination. However, several factors prevented him from winning that spot. His support for immigrants and Catholics was controversial at the time.
