Wilhelmina was a very important Queen of the Netherlands.

Wilhelmina's journey to the throne began when she was a child. She was born on 31 August 1880, in The Hague. Her father was King William III of the Netherlands. When he died in 1890, Wilhelmina became Queen at age ten. Because she was so young, her mother, Queen Emma, helped her rule.
As Queen, Wilhelmina did many brave and unusual things. She was a very curious leader who liked to see facts. In 1916, she went deep under the ocean. She traveled on a Dutch submarine called the O 3.
History shows that Wilhelmina faced many difficult moments. During World War I, she kept the Netherlands neutral. This meant her country did not join the fighting. During the 1930s, the Netherlands worked on huge projects like the Zuiderzee Works. These projects helped protect the land from flooding.
While in Britain, Wilhelmina became a symbol of hope. She led the Dutch government from far away. She used the radio to speak to her people. This helped the Dutch resistance stay strong.
Wilhelmina of the Netherlands was a powerful monarch who ruled for nearly 58 years.

Wilhelmina's path to the throne was determined by the rules of inheritance. At her birth, the Netherlands used the Semi-Salic system. This system favored male heirs over female ones. Because of this, Wilhelmina was only third in line to the throne. Her father, King William III, had three sons with his first wife. However, two of those sons died before Wilhelmina was born. By 1887, the King decided to settle the throne on his only surviving child. When William III died in 1890, ten-year-old Wilhelmina became Queen. Her mother, Queen Emma, served as regent to help her rule.
As Wilhelmina grew, she developed a very strong personality. She was a forceful woman who spoke her mind. She often expressed a deep love for the Dutch people. At the same time, she showed disdain for politicians. She also held strong views on international affairs. During the Boer War, she felt a close affinity toward the Boers. The Boers were descendants of Dutch colonists in South Africa. Wilhelmina even ordered a Dutch cruiser to evacuate Paul Kruger, the president of the South African Republic.
Family life for the Queen was often difficult and complicated. She married Duke Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1901. The marriage was largely unhappy and focused on producing an heir. Wilhelmina suffered several miscarriages and a stillborn son during these years. There were fears that if she remained childless, the Dutch Crown might pass to a German prince. This would have threatened Dutch independence. However, Princess Juliana was born on April 30, 1909. This birth brought great relief to the nation.
Wilhelmina was a leader who embraced technology and business. She was a very savvy investor in the United States. Her personal wealth eventually made her the world's first female billionaire in U.S. dollars. She also used her influence to help the Netherlands grow industrially. One major project was the Zuiderzee Works. This was the largest hydraulic engineering project in the country during the 20th century. It reclaimed land from the sea for agriculture and provided flood protection.
She was also a pioneer in military interest. During World War I, she worked to keep the Netherlands neutral. She wanted a well-trained and equipped army. In 1916, she did something very unusual for a head of state. She traveled aboard the Dutch submarine O 3 during underwater exercises. This made her the first woman to go underwater in a submarine.
The most challenging part of her reign came during World War II. In 1940, Germany invaded the Netherlands. Wilhelmina and her family had to flee to Britain on a British destroyer. While in exile, she became a vital symbol of the Dutch resistance. She frequently spoke to her people over the radio to encourage them.
