A long time ago, people built a fast computer. 
This machine was very special. It worked much faster than other computers. It could also use a new way to store data.
These parts helped the computer remember things. This helped make the computers we use today. Whirlwind was a very big step for science.
In 1951, a new computer called Whirlwind became ready. 
Whirlwind was very fast. Most computers then worked one bit at a time. Whirlwind used bit-parallel mode. This means it worked on many bits at once. This made it sixteen times faster than other machines.
Finding a way to store data was hard. At first, the team tried using tubes with mercury. These were too slow and unreliable. Then they tried a type of tube called electrostatic memory. This also did not work well.
Jay Forrester found a better way. He used magnetic-core memory. This used tiny magnetic parts to hold data.
Whirlwind I was a very special computer built during the Cold War era. 
To understand how it worked, we can look at how it handled data. Most computers at that time used bit-serial mode. This means they processed information one tiny bit at a time. Whirlwind used bit-parallel mode instead. It had sixteen math units that worked on a full 16-bit word every cycle. This made it about sixteen times faster than other machines of that era. In 1951, it could perform 20,000 single-address operations every second. This speed allowed it to handle many changing inputs very quickly.
Finding a way to store information was a very hard job for the team. At first, they tried using mercury delay lines. These were long tubes filled with mercury that sent pulses through the liquid. However, these were too slow and changed with the temperature. They also tried electrostatic memory using electron guns and tubes. This method was also not as reliable as the team needed. Eventually, Jay Forrester found a new way to store data. He used magnetic-core memory, which used tiny magnetic parts to hold bits.
The history of Whirlwind began during World War II. The Navy wanted a computer to run a flight simulator for pilots. They wanted a system that could show realistic flying. Jay Forrester was put in charge of the project at MIT. Other important people included Judy Clapp and Perry Crawford. Construction of the machine started in 1948 with 175 people. This included 70 engineers and technicians working on the build. The project cost about $1 million every year. On April 20, 1951, it successfully calculated interception courses.
Whirlwind was a huge machine that weighed over 20,000 pounds. Even though the Navy lost interest after three years, the work was not wasted. The Air Force used the design for the SAGE air defense system. Its ideas also helped lead to the business computers of the 1960s. Most modern computers use the same bit-parallel math that Whirlwind used. It also helped create the small computers we use today. The lessons learned from this giant machine changed how all computers work.
