Western Union is a huge company that helps people move money.

In the beginning, the company worked by sending telegrams. A telegram is a short written message. Workers would send these messages through long lines of wire. The company also made new tools to help. In 1866, they launched a stock ticker to show market prices. In 1871, they started a way to move money through wires. Later, they used satellites called Westar to carry data. These satellites helped move messages and even video. This was a new way to connect the world.
This big company started in 1851 in Rochester, New York. It was first called the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company. Three men named Samuel L. Selden, Hiram Sibley, and others started it. In 1856, it merged with other firms and changed its name. It became the Western Union Telegraph Company. In 1861, the company finished a very important task. They completed the first transcontinental telegraph. This connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The very first messages went to President Abraham Lincoln.
Western Union grew to be incredibly large. By the year 1900, it had one million miles of telegraph lines.
Western Union is a great example of how technology changes. Just as the telegraph was replaced by the telephone, telegrams were replaced by new ways to talk. The company had to change to stay successful. It moved away from sending messages and focused on money. In 2006, it officially stopped sending telegrams forever. Now, it focuses on being a world leader in moving money. It is a very important tool for immigrants today. They use it to wire money back home to their loved ones.
