It sits between two big rivers called the Nestos and the Evros. To the north, the land meets Bulgaria. To the east, it borders Turkey. The southern edge touches the blue Aegean Sea.

The ground here is not flat. It changes between deep river valleys and large basins. These basins are surrounded by mountains. The Rhodopi mountains in the north have very thick forests.

Other cities like Maroneia also grew strong. Later, many famous empires ruled this land. The Romans and the Byzantines both held power here. The Via Egnatia was a famous road that passed through this area to connect different parts of the world.

History changed many times as different groups came to the region. The Ottoman Empire ruled much of Thrace for a long time. This period brought new people and new ways of life.

During the Balkan Wars and World War I, the borders shifted many times. Bulgaria and Greece both controlled the land at different points. Eventually, the region became part of Greece in 1920. These big changes meant many people had to move to new homes. This history shaped how the region looks today.

It is situated between the Nestos and Evros rivers. The region is part of the larger area known as Thrace. To the north, it borders Bulgaria. To the east, it shares a land border with Turkey. The southern coast meets the Aegean Sea.

This area is divided into three regional units: Xanthi, Rhodope, and Evros. Together with parts of Macedonia, they form the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

The landscape of Western Thrace is quite varied. It consists of deeply cut river valleys and mountain-enclosed basins. These basins vary in size across the terrain. In the north, the Rhodopi mountains form a natural border with Bulgaria. These mountains are covered in dense forest.

The topography creates a mix of open spaces and rugged highlands. This variety of landforms has influenced how people live and travel through the region for thousands of years.

Human history in this region began in the Paleolithic era. During the classical era, the area came under Greek influence. Ancient Greeks established prosperous coastal cities like Sale, Maroneia, and Abdera.

Later, the Achaemenid Empire took control of the region in the late 6th century BC.

Many powerful empires eventually ruled Western Thrace. The Romans annexed the region, and the province of Thracia was founded in 46 AD. The Roman emperor Trajan founded the cities of Traianoupolis and Plotinopolis.

The famous Via Egnatia road passed through this territory. This road was vital for communication between the East and the West. Later, the Byzantine Empire controlled the area. It was organized into the theme of Thrace and later the theme of Macedonia.

This period made the region a center for medieval Greek commerce and culture.

The Ottoman Empire conquered most of the region in the 14th century. Their rule lasted until the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913. During this time, the population became a mix of Greeks, Turks, and Bulgarians.

The borders shifted constantly during the Balkan Wars and World War I. Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey all exerted control at different times. Following the Treaty of Neuilly in 1919, the area was under temporary Entente management. In 1920, the San Remo conference assigned Western Thrace to Greece. These conflicts led to large population exchanges that changed the region's ethnic makeup.

Today, Western Thrace has a population of approximately 371,208 people.

The total area is about 8,578 square kilometers. About 67% of the residents are Orthodox Christian Greeks. The remaining 33% are part of an officially recognized Muslim minority. This minority includes people of Turkish origin, Pomaks, and Romani.

The largest city is Alexandroupolis, which has a municipal population of 72,959. Other major cities include Komotini and Xanthi.

The economy of the region is evolving. While agriculture was once the main focus, new industries are growing. High-tech telecommunications companies have established themselves in the area.
