Often called the gombessa or the African coelacanth, this species is a subject of intense scientific interest. For a long time, people believed these animals were extinct. They only knew of their existence through ancient fossils. The discovery of living specimens changed our understanding of evolutionary history. Today, the species is considered critically endangered by the IUCN Red List.

Physically, the coelacanth is built for life in the deep, dark ocean.

This is possible because of an intracranial joint and associated muscles. This unique anatomy allows them to perform "headstands." During a headstand, they can slurp prey directly out of narrow crevices in underwater caves. They are opportunistic hunters that eat various fish species. Some of their known prey include Amioides polyacanthus and Beryx splendens.

These fish live in specific environments within the western Indian Ocean. They are typically found at depths between 70 and 140 meters. However, they have been spotted as shallow as 30 meters and as deep as 200 meters. They often reside in underwater lava caves during the daytime. These caves provide protection from predators. At night, they move into the surrounding feeding grounds. To manage their internal chemistry, they use a process called osmoregulation. They do this by retaining urea in their blood to balance osmotic pressure. They are also ovoviviparous, meaning they keep their eggs inside their bodies until they hatch. This results in a long gestation period of about 12 months.

The modern history of the coelacanth began with a surprising discovery in 1938. Captain Hendrik Goosen of the trawler Nerine caught a strange fish near South Africa. He contacted Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, a museum curator, to examine the catch. She could not identify the fish using her books. She reached out to Professor J. L. B. Smith for assistance. Smith recognized the specimen as a coelacanth from the fossil record. He named the species Latimeria chalumnae to honor Courtenay-Latimer and the waters where it was found. A second specimen was later captured in 1952 near the Comoros Islands. This second fish helped scientists study the animal's internal organs and muscles more closely.

Recent scientific advances have provided even more detail about this species. In 2013, researchers successfully sequenced the genome of Latimeria chalumnae.

This genetic work was intended to help scientists understand how tetrapods evolved. For a long time, scientists thought coelacanths were the closest relatives to the first land animals. However, the genetic sequencing proved that lungfishes are actually the closest relatives to land tetrapods. This discovery changed how biologists view the evolutionary tree. It showed that morphological similarities can sometimes be misleading compared to genetic data.

Despite their ancient history, the survival of the coelacanth is currently at risk. The population is widely but very sparsely distributed. They live in small colonies along the rim of the western Indian Ocean. This includes the coasts of South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, the Comoros, and Madagascar. In 1991, it was estimated that only 1% of the population near Grand Comoro was accidentally caught each year. Between 1991 and 1994, the total population saw a reduction of about 30%. By 1998, the total population was estimated to be 500 individuals or fewer. Because of these threats, the species is protected by the CITES treaty. This treaty regulates all international trade to prevent the species from going extinct.
