Historically, the county has been shaped by forests and ancient roads. Much of western Warwickshire was once covered by the ancient Forest of Arden. Most of this forest was eventually cut down to provide fuel for industrialisation. Because of this history, many local place names end with "-in-Arden." The remaining area was known as the Felden. This area is now an agricultural landscape through which the River Avon and River Leam flow. During the Roman period, the road known as Watling Street acted as a boundary. It separated the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia from the Danelaw.
