Warren Edward Buffett is a world-famous American investor and philanthropist.

He is the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, a massive corporate conglomerate. A conglomerate is a large company made of many smaller, different businesses. Buffett is widely recognized for his incredible success in the financial markets. As of January 2026, his net worth was estimated at US$148.9 billion. This amount made him the ninth-richest person in the world. Because of his vast fortune, media outlets often call him the "Oracle" or "Sage" of Omaha.

Buffett's interest in business began during his childhood in Omaha, Nebraska. He was the son of Howard Buffett, a businessman and U.S. congressman. As a young boy, Buffett engaged in many small entrepreneurial ventures. He sold chewing gum, magazines, and Coca-Cola by going door to door. He also worked in his grandfather's grocery store and delivered newspapers. In 1945, he and a friend bought a used pinball machine for $25. They placed it in a local barber shop to earn money. By 1947, they had expanded to three shops and sold the business for $1,200.

To build a professional career, Buffett pursued several levels of higher education. He first attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1947. He later graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln at age 20. After being rejected by Harvard Business School, he enrolled at Columbia Business School. It was there that he studied under the famous investor Benjamin Graham.

Graham taught a specific strategy called value investing. This method involves finding stocks that are trading for less than their intrinsic value. Buffett also attended the New York Institute of Finance to study economics.

Buffett's professional journey involved many distinct roles and partnerships. From 1951 to 1954, he worked as an investment salesman at his father's firm. He then served as a securities analyst for the Graham-Newman Corp. from 1954 to 1956. In 1956, he created Buffett Partnership Ltd. to manage investments for others. Through these partnerships, he eventually acquired a textile manufacturer called Berkshire Hathaway. He became the chairman and majority shareholder of Berkshire Hathaway in 1970. In 1978, his longtime associate Charlie Munger joined him as vice-chairman.

His investment decisions often relied on deep analysis of company assets. In 1961, Buffett noted that the Sanborn Map Company was undervalued. The stock sold for $45 per share, but its investments were worth $65 per share. This meant the actual map business was being valued at "minus $20." By 1962, the success of his partnerships made him a millionaire. His partnerships held nearly $7.2 million in assets by that time. Buffett also made significant moves in the insurance and media sectors. He purchased GEICO stock early in his career after meeting its vice president. He also acquired stakes in the Washington Post Company and helped finance the $3.5 billion sale of ABC in 1985.

Despite his immense wealth, Buffett is known for practicing frugality. Frugality is the quality of being careful with money and avoiding waste. He has maintained a relatively simple lifestyle while managing a global empire. Buffett is also a major figure in global philanthropy, which is the desire to promote the welfare of others. In 2010, he co-founded The Giving Pledge with Bill and Melinda Gates.

This initiative encourages billionaires to pledge at least half of their wealth to charity.

Buffett has made a massive commitment to helping society through his fortune. He has pledged to give away 99 percent of his total wealth. Most of these funds are directed toward the Gates Foundation. This dedication shows how individual financial success can be used for large-scale social impact. At a 2025 meeting, Buffett requested that Greg Abel succeed him as CEO. Buffett intends to remain as the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. His career serves as a primary example of how value investing can transform a business into a global leader.
