Long ago, two men fought for power.

Two powerful men once fought for control of Rome.

In 32 BC, the Senate declared war on Cleopatra. This led to a massive battle at sea near Actium.
During the fight, Cleopatra and Antony tried to break through the enemy lines. They could not win. Most of Antony's fleet sank to the bottom of the sea. Antony and Cleopatra fled to Alexandria. Soon, they both died there. This war ended many years of fighting in Rome. Octavian became the first emperor. He was given the name Augustus. His rule brought a long time of peace.
The War of Actium was a massive conflict in the ancient Roman world. It was the last civil war of the Roman Republic. This war was fought between two powerful leaders. One leader was Octavian, who controlled the western parts of Rome. The other leader was Mark Antony, who controlled the eastern lands. Antony had become an ally of Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt.
Octavian used clever ways to start this war. He wanted to take full control of the Roman world. He showed the Roman Senate a will belonging to Antony. The will said Antony wanted to be buried in Egypt. This made the Roman people very angry. Octavian also told the Senate that Antony was not loyal to Rome.
In 31 BC, the two sides met for a huge battle at sea. This battle took place near a place called Actium.
The fighting at sea was very intense. Octavian's friend, Agrippa, helped lead the navy. During the battle, Cleopatra and Antony tried to break through the enemy lines. They took their ships and sailed through a gap in the blockade. But the battle was going against them. Most of Antony's fleet ended up at the bottom of the sea.
After the naval battle, the war came to an end. Octavian moved his army toward Alexandria to find them. Soon after, both Antony and Cleopatra died in that city.

The War of Actium was the final civil war of the Roman Republic. It took place between 32 BC and 30 BC. This massive conflict pitted two powerful Roman leaders against each other. One leader was Octavian, who controlled the western Roman territories. The other was Mark Antony, who controlled the eastern territories. Antony was joined by Cleopatra, the queen of Ptolemaic Egypt.
Before the war, Octavian and Antony were part of a group called the Second Triumvirate. This group helped fill the power vacuum after Julius Caesar was assassinated. Eventually, the leaders split the Roman world between them. Octavian took control of lands like Gaul, Italia, and Africa. Antony took control of Greece, Syria, and Egypt.
Octavian used political strategy to turn the Roman Senate against Antony. He used a propaganda campaign to paint Antony as unfaithful to Rome. Octavian even seized Antony's will from the Temple of Vesta. The will revealed that Antony wanted to be buried in Alexandria with Cleopatra. This news outraged the Roman Senate.
The war involved some of the largest Roman armies ever seen. Both sides raised nearly 200,000 legionaries. These soldiers were experienced veterans of previous civil wars. Many had even served under Julius Caesar twenty years earlier. When the war began, the Senate stripped Antony of his power. He was labeled a traitor. However, 40% of the Senate and both consuls still supported Antony. They left Rome to join his cause in Greece.
The most famous part of the war was the naval battle at Actium in 31 BC.
During the Battle of Actium, Antony's large vessels struggled against Octavian's faster fleet. The fighting was intense, involving rams and projectiles like arrows and stones. Seeing the battle turning against them, Cleopatra and Antony tried to break through the blockade. They took a squadron of ships and sailed through a gap in the lines. However, Agrippa attacked their flanks. Most of Antony's massive fleet was destroyed and sank to the bottom of the sea. Antony and Cleopatra fled to Alexandria with only 90 ships.
After the naval defeat, Antony's land forces lost their supplies. Without control of the sea, his commanders surrendered their legions without a fight. Octavian eventually moved toward Alexandria to finish the war. In 30 BC, both Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide in the city.
The victory at Actium changed the course of history. Octavian became the most powerful man in the Roman world. In 27 BC, the Senate gave him the honorific name Augustus. He became the first Roman emperor. His victory transformed the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. His rule also began the Pax Romana. This was a long period of relative internal peace and stability for the Roman state.
