War in Afghanistan (2001–2021)

A long war happened in Afghanistan.

It started in 2001. A group called al-Qaeda did bad things in the US. The US wanted to find them. The Taliban group helped them. So, many lands joined to fight.

This fight lasted for twenty years. It was a very long war. Many people had to leave their homes. Some people became refugees. The war ended in 2021. The Taliban took control again. We hope for peace one day.

In September 2001, a group called al-Qaeda attacked the United States. They used four planes to do this. The US wanted to find the leader, Osama bin Laden. The Taliban group in Afghanistan helped al-Qaeda. The US asked the Taliban to hand him over. The Taliban said no. So, a group of countries led by the US invaded.

The US and its allies helped make a new government. They wanted to build a democracy. But the Taliban did not stop fighting. They started an insurgency. An insurgency is when a group fights against the government.

Many years passed. In 2011, US forces found and killed Osama bin Laden. Later, the US and its allies began to leave. In 2020, the US made a deal with the Taliban. The US agreed to take all its troops out by 2021. In the summer of 2021, the Taliban fought to take control. They took the capital city, Kabul, in August. The war was then over.

The war was very hard. It killed many people. Millions of people had to leave their homes.

Many things happened during these twenty years. In 2011, a secret US operation killed Osama bin Laden. By that time, about 140,000 foreign troops were in Afghanistan. In 2014, NATO ended its combat operations. The Afghan government then took over most security tasks. In 2020, the US and the Taliban made a deal. The US agreed to leave by 2021. The Taliban promised to stop attacks on the US.

The end of the war came very fast in 2021. The Taliban started a large offensive in the summer. They took the capital city, Kabul, on 15 August. The Afghan leader, Ashraf Ghani, fled the country. The last American plane left by 30 August. This war was very sad for many people. It killed between 176,000 and 212,000 people. Millions of people were also forced to leave their homes.

The war involved complex military stages and different fighting styles. Initially, coalition forces and the Northern Alliance expelled the Taliban from major population centers. In 2004, the U.S.-backed Islamic Republic was established. However, the Taliban reorganized and began an insurgency. They used asymmetric warfare, which includes guerrilla warfare in rural areas and suicide attacks in cities. This made it difficult for the new government to maintain control.

International involvement changed significantly over the two decades. The United Nations sanctioned the International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, to help build a democratic authority. By 2011, foreign troop levels peaked at approximately 140,000 soldiers. During that same year, a covert American operation in Pakistan killed Osama bin Laden. This event led NATO leaders to begin planning an exit strategy. In 2014, NATO ended ISAF combat operations. Security responsibility was then transferred to the Afghan government under the Resolute Support Mission.

Diplomacy eventually became the primary tool to end the fighting. In 2020, the United States and the Taliban signed a formal agreement. The deal required all U.S. troops to withdraw by 2021. In return, the Taliban pledged to prevent militant groups from attacking the U.S. or its allies. The Afghan government was not part of this deal and rejected its terms. This political tension set the stage for the final phase of the conflict.

The war reached its conclusion through a rapid Taliban offensive in the summer of 2021. The Taliban successfully retook control of the country, including the capital city, Kabul, on August 15. The Afghan leader, Ashraf Ghani, fled the country on that same day. The Taliban declared victory, effectively ending the war. The final American military aircraft departed Afghanistan on August 30, 2021.

The human cost of the war was extremely high. It is estimated that between 176,000 and 212,000 people were killed. This total includes at least 46,319 civilians. Additionally, the related War in North-West Pakistan resulted in 66,650 deaths. The conflict also caused massive displacement of people. While 5.7 million refugees returned after the 2001 invasion, 2.6 million Afghans remained refugees by the fall of Kabul. Another 4 million people were internally displaced within the country.
