While the engineer Du Shi first applied hydraulic power to bellows in AD 31, Wang provided the first printed illustrations of this process in 1313. The mechanism uses a waterwheel to drive the inflatable bellows of a blast furnace. This constant airflow is essential for creating cast iron. To make typesetting efficient, Wang developed a sophisticated system using revolving tables. He utilized two separate tables to organize the characters. One table contained official types organized by a standard book of Chinese rhymes and five different tones. The second table held the most frequently used characters for rapid selection. To speed up the work, every character was assigned a specific number. A worker could simply call out a number to select the correct character. Rare characters were carved by wood-cutters only when they were needed. In 1298, this system allowed for the printing of roughly 100 copies of a local paper in a single month.

Later eras continued to build upon the foundations laid by Wang. In 1322, the magistrate Ma Chengde used similar revolving tables to print Confucian classics using 100,000 characters. While bronze movable type was later perfected by Hua Sui in 1490, wooden movable type remained in common use for centuries. During the Qing dynasty, the scale of printing grew even larger. In 1733, the official Jin Jian oversaw a project where 253,000 wooden characters were crafted for the imperial court. Although Jin Jian's methods differed—such as preparing type bodies before cutting characters—the tradition of organized printing remained central to Chinese culture.

The impact of Wang Zhen's work can be seen in how information was shared across different social classes. His agricultural diagrams and descriptions of tools helped bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and field practice. His mechanical innovations in water power and printing changed how goods were produced and how knowledge was recorded. From the local gazetteers of Jingde to the massive literary collections sponsored by princes, movable type became a tool for many. Wang's ability to organize complex systems through numbers and mechanical tables set a standard for future engineers and printers.
