As a young boy, Wang studied with relatives like Wei Shuo. Wei Shuo taught him how to choose the right supplies. She also taught him about proper posture and basic brush strokes. He learned from his uncle, Wang Yi, who was also a painter. These lessons helped him master the way ink moves on paper. His skill became so great that his son, Wang Xianzhi, also became a famous calligrapher.

Wang hosted a large gathering at the Orchid Pavilion on Mount Kuaiji. He invited 41 friends, relatives, and students to join him. They held a special event called a winding stream party. During this game, cups of rice wine floated down a stream. The guests had to write poems before the cups reached them. Wang wrote a famous piece called the "Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion."

He served in many roles between the years 324 and 354. He worked in the Palace Library and served as a mentor. In 347, he received his highest title, "General of the Right Army." This earned him the nickname "Wang Youjun." Even though he had military titles, he did not like war. He often tried to stop fighting between different leaders. He eventually retired in 355 to focus on his own interests.

Today, we still see the impact of his amazing talent.

No original pieces of his writing have survived to this day. Instead, we study ink rubbings and handwritten copies made by others. Long ago, Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty made Wang's style the gold standard. He required court scholars to study Wang's techniques. He was born in Langya Commandery in what is now Shandong. After the Western Jin dynasty collapsed, his family fled to southern China. This move helped establish the Eastern Jin dynasty in 317. Between the years 324 and 354, Wang held many government positions. He worked in the Palace Library and served as a mentor to future leaders. In 347, he reached his highest title, "General of the Right Army." This earned him the nickname "Wang Youjun."

Despite his high military titles, Wang did not enjoy warfare. He often tried to prevent armed conflicts between different leaders. For example, he tried to convince Yin Hao to stop military expeditions to northern China. These expeditions eventually failed. Wang eventually chose to leave government service in 355. He did this after a political rival, Wang Shu, became his superior. Wang Shu investigated the finances of Kuaiji and accused Wang of mishandling taxes. Wang decided to retire to Jinting to focus on his personal interests.

One of the most famous events in his life occurred in 353.

During this event, Wang composed the "Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion." This work is one of the most famous pieces of calligraphy ever written.

After retiring, Wang devoted himself to Taoist practices. He lived in Jinting and followed the Way of the Celestial Masters movement. He collected medicinal herbs and practiced abstinence from cereals. He even transcribed several important Taoist texts.

Wang’s family also valued art and education. He and his wife, Xi Xuan, had eight children. Their youngest son, Wang Xianzhi, became a famous calligrapher too. Together, they were often praised as the "Two Wangs."

Today, we learn about Wang through copies rather than originals.
