Climbing often requires great skill and patience. In 1951, Bonatti finished a very hard climb. He climbed the east face of the Grand Capucin. This was a tall wall made of red granite. The team faced many storms during their attempts. They even had to spend time in hanging bivouacs. A bivouac is a temporary place to rest on a mountain. They finally finished the climb and returned safely to the hut.
Bonatti's life of adventure began in Italy. He was born in Bergamo in 1930. As a child, he spent time in the Po Valley. His family had a hard time after World War II. Because of this, he worked in a steel mill. He would climb on Sundays after his Saturday night shifts. By age 18, he was climbing in the Italian Prealps. He quickly joined the best climbers in Italy.

They accused Bonatti of using the oxygen cylinders during his night on the mountain. This accusation suggested he caused the team to run out of oxygen early. Bonatti maintained his innocence, noting the mask and regulator were at the camp. He eventually proved his version of the facts was accurate. In 2007, the Italian Alpine Club officially recognized that the other climbers had lied.
