In 1569, the Ottoman Empire tried to dig a canal to help trade with Central Asia. They only finished about one-third of the work before bad weather stopped them. Later, Peter the Great tried to build a canal in the late 1600s. His first attempt was very short, only 4 kilometers long. He also tried a second project called the Ivanovsky Canal, but it was too shallow.

Today's canal was finally finished by the Soviet Union. Construction began before the Second World War but was interrupted. From 1948 to 1952, about 900,000 workers built the canal. This group included 100,000 German prisoners of war and 100,000 gulag prisoners. The canal officially opened on June 1, 1952. It is so important that the composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote music to celebrate it.

Moving heavy ships across different elevations requires a precise mechanical process. The canal uses a series of locks to act as a water staircase. A lock is a chamber with gates that can raise or lower a ship. On the Volga slope, there are nine single-chamber locks. On the Don slope, there are four additional locks. These locks allow ships to climb or descend to match the river levels. The highest point of the canal is the Varverovskoye Reservoir. This reservoir sits between locks 9 and 10. To keep the water levels steady, three powerful pumping stations pull water from the Don.

The canal is designed to handle very large vessels known as the Volgo–Don Max Class. These ships can carry up to 5,000 tonnes of cargo. The locks are specifically shaped to be long, wide, and deep to accommodate them. While the locks on the Volga side are smaller than those on the main Volga River, they are still quite large. This engineering allows for the massive movement of resources across the Russian landscape. The canal starts at the Volga's Sarepta backwater near Volgograd. It ends at the Tsimlyansk Reservoir in the town of Kalach-na-Donu.

Humans have recognized the importance of this route for thousands of years. Ancient trade routes existed between the rivers long before modern engineering. A fortified settlement called Tanais existed in the Don delta as early as 438 BC. In 1569, the Ottoman Empire attempted to build a canal to connect to Central Asia. They hoped to facilitate trade and allow pilgrims to reach Mecca. Historians believe they finished about one-third of the work before weather forced them to stop. Later, Peter the Great attempted several projects in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. His first attempt used the Ilovlya and Kamyshinka rivers, but it was abandoned in 1701. A second attempt, the Ivanovsky Canal, used the Oka, Upa, and Shat rivers. It featured twenty-four locks, but financial problems from the Great Northern War halted the project in 1709.

The modern canal was a massive undertaking by the Soviet Union. Construction began before the Second World War but was interrupted by the conflict. Between 1948 and 1952, about 900,000 workers completed the project. This workforce included 100,000 German prisoners of war and 100,000 gulag prisoners. The canal officially opened on June 1, 1952. The completion was so significant that composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote a tone poem to celebrate it. The canal handles an immense amount of cargo every year. In 2004, the Maritime Board reported that 10.9 million tonnes of cargo passed through. By 2007, reports stated that 450,000 vessels had moved 336 million tonnes of cargo over 55 years. Most of this movement is from east to west, totaling about 7.20 million tonnes. In 2006, only 0.85 million tonnes moved from west to east. A large portion of the cargo, about 4.14 million tonnes, consisted of oil or oil products. Other goods include coal from Donetsk, minerals, grain, lumber, and building materials. The canal is even capable of moving massive industrial components. In 2016, it helped transport a 333-tonne nuclear power plant core. This component was 13 meters high and 4.5 meters in diameter.

Looking toward the future, engineers have considered ways to expand this system. In the 1980s, work began on a project called Volga–Don 2. This would have started from the Volgograd Reservoir to reduce the number of locks needed. However, the project was abruptly cancelled in 1990 to save money. Other ideas involve building a second parallel channel with larger locks. This could increase annual cargo capacity from 16.5 million tonnes to 30 million tonnes. Another option is the Eurasia Canal, which would follow a more southerly route. This route would use the Kuma–Manych Depression and require fewer locks. Such improvements would continue to connect the Caspian basin to the Black Sea more efficiently.
