This volcano works by releasing heat and material from deep inside. It often pushes out thick, slow lava called andesite. This lava builds up to form a lava dome. Sometimes, the volcano has big, loud explosions. These explosions create pyroclastic flows, which are fast clouds of hot ash and gas. The volcano also sends ash and tephra high into the sky. These clouds can spread over very large areas. These events happen because of the way the volcano's materials move.

A stratovolcano is a mountain built up by many layers of material. This volcano is part of the Colima Volcanic Complex. That complex includes the taller Nevado de Colima and the extinct El Cántaro. Colima is the youngest of these three parts. It is often called Volcán de Fuego. It is considered one of the most active volcanoes in North America. Most of its surface area is located in the state of Jalisco. It sits near the western end of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. This location is west of Mexico City and south of Guadalajara.

Understanding how this volcano works requires looking at its specific materials. The lava produced here is called andesite. This type of lava contains between 56% and 61% silica, or SiO2. Because andesite is viscous, it is thick and slow-moving. This thick lava often extrudes to form a lava dome. A lava dome is a mound-shaped mass of rock on the volcano's surface. Sometimes, the volcano produces much larger explosions. These explosions create pyroclastic flows. A pyroclastic flow is a fast-moving cloud of hot ash and gas. These events also send ash and tephra high into the atmosphere.

Geological history shows that this area has changed dramatically over time. During the late Pleistocene era, a massive landslide occurred at the mountain. This landslide moved about 2,200 km2 of debris. The debris traveled roughly 120 km toward the Pacific Ocean. The currently active cone sits inside a large caldera. During the 2005 eruption, pyroclastic flows traveled 4 to 5 km from the vent. Lava bombs also landed between 3 and 4 km away. Because of these risks, authorities established an exclusion zone. This zone is located within 6.5 km of the summit to keep people safe.

To manage these risks, scientists monitor the volcano very closely. The Colima Volcano Observatory at the University of Colima manages this work. A dedicated team analyzes and communicates every event that occurs. They interpret the data to understand what the volcano is doing. In 2018, a webcam was installed near the volcano. This allows researchers and the public to see activity in real-time. This constant monitoring helps protect the many people living in the surrounding areas.
