Additionally, Beslan Airport is located only 9 kilometres away. The Georgian Military Road, part of European route E117, begins here to connect the city to the South Caucasus.\n\nVladikavkaz has a complex history involving many different names and political shifts. It was founded in 1784 as a Russian fortress. It was built near the Darial Gorge to serve as an outpost for communication routes between Russia and Georgia. Some historical sources suggest it was founded on the site of the Ossetian village of Kapkai. Others suggest it was built on the site of an Ingush village named Zaur. The city has undergone several name changes due to political events. In 1931, it was renamed Ordzhonikidze to honor the Soviet leader Sergo Ordzhonikidze. In 1944, it was renamed Dzaudzhikau, before returning to the name Ordzhonikidze in 1954. In 1990, the city officially acquired a double name: Vladikavkaz in Russian and Dzaudzhikau in Ossetian.\n\nThroughout its history, the city has been a site of significant conflict. It was fought over during both the Russian Civil War and World War II. In February 1919, the Volunteer Army under General Anton Denikin seized the city. However, the Red Army expelled them in March 1920. During World War II, Nazi German forces attempted to seize the city in November 1942. The Soviet army successfully repelled the attack, and the Nazis left North Ossetia in January 1943. More recently, the city saw political violence when Mayor Vitaly Karayev was assassinated in November 2008. His successor, Kazbek Pagiyev, was also assassinated just days later in December 2008.\n\nThe population of Vladikavkaz is ethnically diverse. According to the 2021 Census, 69.7% of the residents are Ossetians. Russians make up 22.0% of the population, while Armenians account for 2.9%. Georgians represent 1.6% of the residents. Other groups include Ingush, Azerbaijanis, and various others. This diversity is reflected in the city's religious landscape. Eastern Orthodox Christianity is the primary religion for many Ossetians, Russians, and Georgians.
