The Visayas is a major group of islands in the Philippines.

History shows the Visayans were great sailors.
Today, the Visayas is a place of bright culture and celebration.

The Visayas is one of the three principal geographical divisions of the Philippines.
The Visayas is organized into four administrative regions. These are Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and the Negros Island Region. The populations of these areas are quite large. Western Visayas has 4.73 million people. The Negros Island Region has 4.76 million people. Central Visayas is the largest with 6.54 million people. Eastern Visayas has a population of 4.5 million. Some provinces like Palawan, Romblon, and Masbate are also linked to the Visayan identity. Their languages are closely related to other Visayan languages.
There are many theories about the origin of the name "Visayas." Some authors from the 1950s claimed it came from the Sanskrit empire of Sri Vijaya. They thought the Visayans were settlers or subjects of that empire. However, linguist Eugene Verstraelen argued this was unlikely. He noted that "Vijaya" would likely evolve into "Bidaya" or "Biraya" in local languages. Other stories suggest a connection to the Bisaya ethnic group in Borneo. Some claim the name came from a folk hero named "Sri Visaya." Others suggest it was an exclamation of beauty from the Sultan of Brunei. Most historians view these as mere speculations or folk etymologies.
Spanish explorers provided the first documented colonial names for the region. They often called the inhabitants "Pintados," which means "the painted ones." This referred to the practice of full-body tattooing, known as batok. These tattoos could reach up to the neck. The term "Bisaya" was first used by the Spanish for people on Panay. However, the name was likely an endonym used by the people long before. Early expeditions in the 1500s reported places named "Bisaya" in Mindanao. This suggests the name was already in use across different areas.
Historical records show the Visayans were skilled seafaring people. In the 12th century, Chinese officials called them "Pi-sho-ye."

Spanish colonization began after the defeat of the Magellan expedition. Miguel López de Legazpi arrived in 1543 and 1565 to colonize the islands. This led to the spread of Christianity and Western culture. However, colonization also led to resistance and revolutions. Leaders like Francisco Dagohoy led a rebellion in Bohol from 1744 to 1829. Other figures like Teresa Magbanua and Graciano Lopez Jaena fought for change. Negros even briefly became an independent nation called the Cantonal Republic of Negros. The region has seen many shifts in political borders over the years.
Today, the Visayas is a center of vibrant culture and large cities. Cebu City has a population of over one million people. Bacolod City and Iloilo City are also major urban centers. The region celebrates its history through massive festivals. The Ati-Atihan festival is held in Kalibo.
