Massey did many different jobs throughout his life. First, he worked in the military during the First World War. He served as an officer starting in 1917. After the war, he helped lead his family's business. He eventually moved into politics and diplomacy. Being a diplomat means representing your country in other lands. He worked as an envoy in the United States. He also served as a high official in the United Kingdom. These roles helped him learn how different nations work together.
His work in politics and diplomacy changed how Canada was seen. 
In 1952, Massey reached the highest level of service.
Massey also cared deeply about culture and learning.

Massey was born in Toronto, Ontario, on February 20, 1887. His father, Chester Daniel Massey, owned the Massey-Harris Co. This company was a major business and the predecessor to Massey Ferguson. The Massey family was one of the wealthiest in Toronto. They were a prominent Methodist family known for their philanthropy. They supported many local organizations, including Victoria University and Massey Hall. 
His education prepared him for a life of leadership and history. He attended St. Andrew's College from 1902 to 1906. He then studied at University College at the University of Toronto. During this time, he joined The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada in 1907. He also joined the Kappa Alpha Society, where he met William Lyon Mackenzie King. King would later become a Prime Minister and a lifelong friend. Massey later earned a Master of Arts in history from Balliol College at the University of Oxford.
Massey's career included military service and business management. In 1914, Canada entered the First World War. Massey was commissioned as an officer for Military District No. 2 in 1917. He worked for the Cabinet war committee until his discharge in 1918. In 1921, he became the president of his father's company, Massey-Harris Co. However, he found corporate life unsuited to him. He resigned from the business in 1925 to pursue politics.
His political and diplomatic work established new ways for Canada to interact with the world. 
During his time in London, Massey witnessed major changes in the British monarchy. He was present during the accession of King George VI. He also dealt with the abdication crisis of King Edward VIII in 1936. Massey supported the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Stanley Baldwin, during this crisis. He believed the King should not marry Wallis Simpson. Massey was a strong Anglophile, meaning he admired British traditions and culture. He believed Canada was a British nation located in North America.
Massey's influence on Canadian culture was profound and lasting.
Even after his term as Governor General ended in 1959, Massey remained an important figure. He was entitled to the title of The Right Honourable for life. He continued his philanthropic work until his death on December 30, 1967.
