This camp was part of the Roman province of Pannonia. Construction of the legionary camp began around AD 97. At its peak, Vindobona had about 15,000 people. The city was a vital part of Roman trade and communication. In 212, it was granted Roman city rights as a municipium. Later, the area saw influence from the Lombards and Pannonian Avars. Slavs eventually formed the majority of the population. In the 8th century, the Baiuvarii began to settle the region.

The Middle Ages brought new rulers and structures to Vienna. In 1155, the Babenberg family moved their residence to the city. They ruled Austria from 976 to 1246. Vienna was officially granted city rights in 1221. Later, the Habsburg dynasty took control. They made Vienna the seat of the Holy Roman Empire emperors. They held this position until the empire dissolved in 1806. In 1804, the Austrian Empire was formed. Vienna became its capital. The city was a major German-speaking center. It was the largest such city in the 18th and 19th centuries. It peaked at two million people before Berlin overtook it in the 20th century.
