The *Victoria amazonica* is a giant water lily.

The Victoria amazonica is a truly giant water lily. It is the second largest plant in the Nymphaeaceae family. You might know it as the giant water lily. People in Brazil call it Vitória-Régia. In the Inca language, it is called Atun Sisac, which means "great flower." 
The way this plant works is quite amazing. It has huge leaves that float on the water. These leaves stay up because they have air spaces inside. This makes the leaves very light. If you spread weight evenly, the leaves can hold a lot. One leaf in Missouri once held 35 kilograms! 
People have studied this plant for a long time. In 1825, a botanist named Aimé Bonpland described it. Later, John Lindley gave the plant its genus name in 1837. He named it after Queen Victoria. 
There are many interesting facts about how the lily grows. The plant grows from a thick part called a rhizome. This rhizome can live for at least 7 years. The flowers are also very large and heavy. They only grow as large as some of the biggest flowers on Earth. 
You can think of the flower like a clever trap for beetles. The flowers give off a fruity smell to attract beetles. When the beetles go inside, the flower closes up.

These stalks support enormous leaves, or laminae, that float on the surface. These petioles can be as long as a green anaconda. 
To survive in crowded tropical waters, the lily uses several physical defenses. The stems and the undersides of the leaves are covered in small spines. These spines protect the plant from being eaten by fish or other herbivores. The spines also serve an offensive purpose. As the lily grows, it aggressively seeks sunlight. It can use its spiny stalks to push aside or crush rival plants. This allows the lily to hog the sunlight and darken the water below. This behavior prevents other plants from growing directly beneath its massive leaves.
The reproductive cycle of the *Victoria amazonica* is a complex, two-day process. The flowers begin to open just as the sun sets. It can take up to 48 hours for a flower to open fully. A single plant will have all its flowers in the same phase at once. They are either all in the female phase or all in the male phase. This ensures the plant cannot self-pollinate. Instead, it must rely on a different individual for pollination. 
The plant has co-evolved a mutualistic relationship with scarab beetles of the genus *Cyclocephala*. These beetles are the primary pollinators. On the first night, the flower buds open and release a fruity smell. The white petals attract the beetles with both color and scent. Once the beetles enter, the flower closes and traps them inside. The interior contains spongy, starchy tissue that provides food for the beetles. During this time, the plant releases anthocyanins. These pigments change the petal color from white to a reddish pink. 
On the second evening, the flower opens enough to release the trapped beetles. As the insects push through the stamens to exit, they become covered in pollen. The beetles then fly to a newly opened flower of a different plant. This completes the pollination cycle. This specific process was described in detail by researchers Sir Ghillean Prance and Jorge Arius. The flowers themselves are massive. They can grow up to 30 centimeters in diameter. Their weight is exceeded in mass only by members of the genus *Rafflesia*.
The history of this plant involves intense scientific and social interest. In 1837, John Lindley described the genus *Victoria*. He named it to honor Queen Victoria. This followed earlier work by botanists like Aimé Bonpland in 1825 and Eduard Friedrich Poeppig in 1832. In the 19th century, a famous rivalry emerged among English gardeners. The Duke of Devonshire and the Duke of Northumberland competed to grow the lily. Joseph Paxton, working for the Duke of Devonshire, was the first to make it bloom in 1849. He used coal-fired boilers to mimic a warm swamp. The leaf structure even inspired Paxton's design for the Crystal Palace.
Today, *Victoria amazonica* is a popular subject in botanical gardens worldwide. To grow them, gardeners must provide warm water between 29 and 32°C. While not currently considered endangered, the plant faces potential threats. Deforestation and climate change could impact the wetland ecosystems it relies on. However, a 2022 assessment suggested it be listed as "Least Concern" due to its wide distribution.
