World War I was a major event during his reign. At first, Italy did not join the fighting. But in 1915, the king decided that Italy should enter the war. This was a big decision that only the king could make. Italy fought against the Habsburg Empire. In the end, Italy won and gained new lands. These lands included Trento and Trieste. Because of this win, people called him the "King of Victory."

After the war, things became difficult in Italy. An economic downturn made the country unstable. A man named Benito Mussolini led the Fascist movement. In 1922, his followers led the March on Rome.

He was a member of the House of Savoy, a royal family that ruled Italy. During his nearly 46-year reign, he saw the rise and fall of the Fascist regime. He also saw Italy fight in both World War I and World War II. His leadership spanned a time of massive industrial growth and intense political change. Because he held significant constitutional powers, his personal decisions shaped the direction of the nation.

Victor Emmanuel III was born in Naples in 1869 to King Umberto I and Queen Margherita.

He was named after his grandfather, Victor Emmanuel II. Because his parents were first cousins, he was quite short in stature. Some Italians even gave him the nickname "Sciaboletta," which means "little sabre." Before he became king, he was known as the Prince of Naples. In 1896, he married Princess Elena of Montenegro.

He became king in 1900 following the assassination of his father.

Though he was a shy man, he was committed to constitutional government. The Italian constitution, called the Statuto Albertino, gave the king specific residual powers. For example, the king had the authority to appoint the prime minister. He also held the ultimate power to declare war. Despite his preference for a quiet life, he intervened ten times to solve political crises between 1900 and 1922.

For the first fourteen years, Prime Minister Giovanni Giolitti led the country. Giolitti focused on industrialization and passed democratic reforms. One major reform was the introduction of universal male suffrage, which gave more men the right to vote. Under Giolitti, Italy also colonized Libya after the Italo-Turkish War. Later, other leaders like Antonio Salandra and Vittorio Emanuele Orlando took charge. These leaders navigated Italy through the complexities of early 20th-century diplomacy.

When World War I began, Italy was initially neutral. However, in April 1915, Italy signed the secret Treaty of London to join the Triple Entente. While many politicians opposed the war, the king used his constitutional authority to personally decide that Italy should enter the conflict. Italy eventually won the war against the Habsburg Empire. This victory allowed Italy to annex provinces like Trento and Trieste. Because of this, many people called him the "King of Victory."

After the war, Italy faced a difficult economic downturn. This instability helped the National Fascist Party, led by Benito Mussolini, rise to power. In 1922, Mussolini led the "March on Rome" to take control.

The king's cabinet wanted to declare martial law to stop the movement. However, the king refused to sign the decree because he feared a civil war. Instead, he appointed Mussolini as prime minister. The king remained silent during the political abuses of the Fascist era. He even accepted new titles as Emperor of Ethiopia in 1936 and King of Albania in 1939.

World War II brought even more turmoil to his reign.

Although the king advised Mussolini against entering the war, he eventually granted Mussolini the power to conduct it in June 1940. In 1943, following an Allied invasion of Sicily, the king dismissed Mussolini. He appointed Pietro Badoglio as the new Prime Minister. Italy signed an armistice with the Allies in September 1943. After the Germans occupied parts of Italy, the king fled to Brindisi and later declared war on Germany. He eventually transferred most of his powers to his son, Umberto, in 1944.

In 1946, Victor Emmanuel III officially abdicated his throne.

He hoped his departure would help the monarchy survive an upcoming referendum. However, the referendum resulted in Italy becoming a republic. The king went into exile in Alexandria, Egypt, where he died in 1947. His remains were eventually returned to Italy in 2017. His life remains a significant study of how a monarch interacts with shifting political systems.
