Many people fought back. They joined a group called the Resistance. They worked with Free France to help the country. In 1944, the war changed. New leaders led by Charles de Gaulle took over. They helped make France free again.
Vichy France was a special and difficult part of history. It was a government that ruled during World War II.

This government worked in a very specific way. After Germany won a big battle in France, a peace deal called an armistice was signed.

Life under this regime was very hard for many people. The government had a lot of control over everything. They started a program called the "Révolution nationale." This was a way to change how French people lived and thought.

Many important things happened between 1940 and 1944. In October 1940, Pétain met with Adolf Hitler in a place called Montoire-sur-le-Loir.

People did not just accept these rules. Many French people joined a group called the Resistance.

Vichy France refers to the French government that existed during World War II.

The regime began after the Armistice of June 22, 1940. This agreement followed the German invasion of France on May 10, 1940. When the Prime Minister, Paul Reynaud, refused to sign the peace deal, he resigned. Pétain replaced him and signed the armistice. This deal split the country into different zones. Germany occupied the northern and western parts of France. The Vichy government controlled the southern part, known as the Unoccupied Zone or the Free Zone.
Vichy France operated under a policy of collaboration with Nazi Germany.
The government was an authoritarian dictatorship. It replaced the liberal policies of the Third Republic with a program called the Révolution nationale.
The regime's policies had devastating consequences for many people. The state and police worked to round up Jewish people and other groups labeled as "undesirables."

The situation changed significantly in November 1942. After the Allies landed in North Africa during Operation Torch, Germany responded with Operation Anton.

By 1944, the liberation of France began. The Free French Provisional Government, or GPRF, was installed to replace the Vichy regime. The last Vichy exiles were captured in the Sigmaringen enclave in April 1945. After the war, Pétain was tried for treason by the new government. He was sentenced to death, but this was later changed to life imprisonment. Only four senior officials were specifically tried for crimes against humanity. This complex era remains a central subject in the study of modern European history and political legitimacy.
