Born in 1842 in Cherepovets, Russia, he became famous for his realist style. Realism is an artistic approach that depicts subjects as they truly appear in real life. Vereshchagin used this technique to document the harsh realities of conflict and human suffering. His primary goal was didactic, meaning he intended to teach a lesson through his art. He sought to promote peace by showing the actual horrors of war. Because his scenes were so graphic, many were never exhibited to the public.

Vereshchagin's artistic process was deeply tied to his life as a soldier and explorer. After graduating from the Naval Cadet Corps, he dedicated himself to the study of drawing. He traveled extensively to observe his subjects firsthand, visiting Central Asia, the Himalayas, and British India. He often worked in an atelier, which is a professional artist's studio. In Munich, he produced war paintings so rapidly that some accused him of using assistants. His works were often massive, such as his depiction of a royal parade in Jaipur. This painting is believed to be the second-largest oil painting in the world.

His career involved several distinct stages of professional and military life. He began as a naval officer, sailing to places like Denmark, France, and Egypt. He then transitioned into a professional artist, studying under Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris. Later, he served as an active soldier during major conflicts, including the Second Russo-Turkish War. During this war, he was present at the siege of Plevna and the Shipka Pass. He also served as a secretary to General Skobelev at San Stefano. These military experiences provided the raw material for his most famous series of paintings.

Vereshchagin's history is marked by both great achievement and intense controversy. In 1863, he won a medal from the Imperial Academy of Arts for his work. However, his paintings often challenged the authorities of his time. In 1874, St. Petersburg officials denied him a showing for two specific paintings. These were "The Apotheosis of War" and "Left Behind." Officials claimed these works portrayed the Russian military in a poor light. His work "Suppression of the Indian Revolt by the English" also caused international debate. People in Britain and America argued over whether the painting depicted modern or historical events.

Significant numbers define the scale of his impact and his travels. He spent over two years on an extensive tour of Asia starting in late 1874. This tour included Mongolia, Tibet, and British India. His paintings attracted large crowds, including people who usually had no interest in art. For example, his exhibitions in Paris in 1881 drew a massive public following. He also produced a series of works regarding Napoleon's 1812 Russian campaign. These works were so detailed that they inspired his own book on the subject.

Notable examples of his work demonstrate his commitment to realism. He painted a series of scenes from the New Testament during a trip to Syria and Palestine. These works caused controversy because his depiction of Christ was considered unseemly due to its realism. Another famous series was his "Turkestan Series," which he exhibited at the Crystal Palace in London. He also documented the Indian Revolt through a series of three controversial paintings. Even his final moments were connected to his art. His last painting, a council of war, was recovered almost undamaged after his ship sank.

Vereshchagin's life ended during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. He joined Admiral Makarov on the battleship Petropavlovsk. On April 13, 1904, the ship struck two mines and sank, killing Vereshchagin. His legacy remains visible in science and geography today. The town of Vereshchagino in Perm Krai is named in his honor. Additionally, a minor planet, 3410 Vereshchagin, was discovered by a Soviet astronomer in 1978. His life remains a connection between the worlds of military service and fine art.
