Long ago, a group of brave men traveled far. They came from lands in the north. These men became special guards for a leader. They were called the Varangian Guard.
The Varangian Guard was a special group of soldiers. They served as bodyguards for the Byzantine emperors. These emperors ruled from a city called Constantinople.
Most of these guards came from Northern Europe. Many were Norsemen from lands like Sweden and Norway. Later, many came from England. These men were called Anglo-Saxons.
The emperors chose these fighters for a reason. Local guards often switched sides during fights. But the Varangians were very loyal to the emperor. They were known for using a large weapon called a Dane axe. This was a heavy, single-edged iron axe.
The Guard was formed in a big way in the year 988. Emperor Basil II made them his official personal guard. They did more than just stand guard. They also fought in many big wars. They often helped win battles at the most important times. Some famous men, like Harald Hardrada, were part of the Guard. He later became a king in Norway. The Guard lasted for a very long time. They were still around in the 14th century.
The Varangian Guard was a group of elite soldiers in the Byzantine Empire. They served as personal bodyguards for the emperors who ruled from Constantinople.
Most of these warriors came from Northern Europe. For the first hundred years, they were mainly Norsemen from Scandinavia. This included men from Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.

The Guard became a formal unit in the year 988. Emperor Basil II officially formed them during this time. He made this choice after Vladimir I of Kiev sent 6,000 men to help. This happened after the Christianization of the Kievan Rus'.
The Varangians did much more than just stand guard. They were often used in the most important parts of a battle. In the year 1018, they helped fight a revolt in Italy. They also fought in Sicily against the Normans. One very famous member of the Guard was Harald Hardrada. He was a warrior who later became the King of Norway.
This group of soldiers lasted for hundreds of years. They stayed active until at least the middle of the 14th century. By the late 13th century, many of them had blended in with the local Greek people. However, people still identified as Varangians in Constantinople as late as the year 1400. Their story shows how people from different lands can come together to serve a single leader. They left a lasting mark on the history of the Byzantine Empire.
The Varangian Guard was an elite military unit of the Byzantine Empire. They served as the personal bodyguards for the Byzantine emperors.
Emperors used a specific strategy when recruiting these soldiers. They purposefully chose fighters from distant lands outside of Byzantium. This policy was a way to ensure absolute loyalty. Local Byzantine soldiers often had political ties to different factions. These local loyalties could lead to revolts against the emperor. Because the Varangians were foreigners, they lacked these local connections. They could be trusted to suppress any uprisings by disloyal Byzantine groups.
The Guard's composition changed over several centuries. For the first 100 years, the unit was mostly made of Norsemen and Rus'. The Rus' were people who likely originated from coastal eastern Sweden. Their name may come from an Old Norse term meaning "the men who row."
After the Norman conquest of England, the Guard's makeup shifted again. It began to include many more Anglo-Saxons. Some sources say as many as 5,000 people arrived in 235 ships.
The formal institution of the Guard began in the year 988. Emperor Basil II officially organized the unit at this time. This happened following the Christianization of the Kievan Rus' by Vladimir I of Kiev. Vladimir sent 6,000 men to Basil II as part of a military assistance agreement. In exchange, Vladimir married the emperor's sister, Anna, and brought his people to the Christian faith. This large group of warriors became the nucleus of the permanent Varangian Guard.
The Varangians were famous for their specific weapons and combat style. Their primary weapon was the Dane axe. This was a heavy, single-edged iron weapon with a broad blade.
Throughout history, the Guard participated in many famous military actions. In 1018, they helped defeat a revolt in southern Italy. In 1122, they were vital to a victory at the Battle of Beroia. There, they used their axes to break through a circle of Pecheneg wagons. One very famous member was Harald Hardrada. He served in the Guard before eventually becoming the King of Norway. The Guard's influence lasted for a long time, even as the members eventually assimilated into the Greek population. By the year 1400, some people in Constantinople still identified as Varangians.
