The glacier follows a specific path through the Yazgulem Range. It begins at a very high elevation of 6,100 meters. From there, the ice flows in a generally northward direction. It moves along a path that stays to the east of the Garmo Peak.

As the ice travels downward, it eventually melts. This melting process turns the solid ice into liquid water. This water empties into the Balandkiik River near the border of Kyrgyzstan at an elevation of 3,200 meters.

This movement of water creates a complex drainage system. The meltwater from the glacier feeds into the Balandkiik River first. From there, the water flows into several other major rivers. These include the Muksu, Surkhob, Vakhsh, and Amu Darya rivers.

The glacier is surrounded by many impressive mountain landmarks. To its west lies the Tajik National Academy of Sciences Range. It is also near Mount Garmo and Ismoil Somoni Peak. Other nearby features include Peak Korzhenevskaya and the headwaters of the Vanj and Yazgulyam rivers. To the south, you will find Independence Peak. The glacier is also bordered by Altyn Mazar to the north.

History shows that the glacier is a changing environment. It was discovered in 1878. It was named after Alexei Pavlovich Fedchenko, a Russian explorer. However, he was not the person who actually discovered it. A German-Soviet expedition led by Otto von Mohl explored the area more thoroughly in 1928.
