When the stem moves, it carries the disc to a position that either blocks or opens the ports. The ports are the actual passages that allow the fluid to pass through the device.

To ensure a tight seal, the disc must press against a surface called the seat. The seat is the interior part of the body that contacts the disc to prevent leaks. There are two main types of seats used in engineering. Hard seats are cut directly into the valve body and are very durable. Soft seats are made of materials like PTFE or elastomers, such as EPDM or FKM.

While soft seats are much less likely to leak when closed, hard seats are better for heavy-duty use. Different valve types use different seats; for example, gate and globe valves usually have hard seats. In contrast, ball and butterfly valves typically use soft seats.

Valves are classified by how they are moved, or actuated. Manual valves are operated by a person using a handle, lever, pedal, or wheel.

Automatic valves do not require a person to turn a handle. Instead, they can be driven by changes in pressure, temperature, or flow. These changes might act upon a piston or a diaphragm to trigger the movement. For more complex systems, an actuator is used to provide remote or automatic control. An actuator allows the valve to be positioned very accurately based on external inputs. Some valves, like check valves, are so simple they require no external handle or actuator at all.

There is a massive variety in the size and material of these devices. A valve might be as small as 0.1 mm or as large as 60 cm. Specialized valves can even have a diameter exceeding five meters.

Materials are chosen based on what the valve must handle. Brass, steel, and cast iron are very common for standard uses. However, seawater applications often require duplex or super duplex valves to resist corrosion.

In chemical plants, Monel valves are used for hydrofluoric acid, while Hastelloy is used for high-temperature nuclear plants. Even plastics like PVC or nylon are used for lower pressures.

We see the influence of valves in almost every modern industry. They are essential in water processing, mining, and power generation. In the automotive industry, poppet valves are used in internal combustion engines to manage fuel-air mixtures and exhaust.
