On the eastern edge of the city lies Lake Valencia. This is the second-largest lake in the country. The climate is a tropical savanna climate. This is known scientifically as Köppen: Aw. The city is warm due to its latitude and proximity to the sea. There is a distinct wet season from May to November. A dry season follows from December to April.

Human history in this region began long before the Spanish arrived. Hunters and gatherers inhabited the area in the fourth millennium BC. They likely practiced elementary forms of agriculture. Between AD 200 and 1000, settlements grew near Lake Valencia. Around the year 1000, new groups migrated from the Orinoco river area. They likely traveled along the Pao river. These migrations created the Valencioide culture. Most people belonged to Arawak groups. They fished and grew crops like maize and cotton. They built houses on artificial mounds to avoid floods from the lake.

Spanish history began when Captain Alonso Díaz Moreno founded the city. This happened on March 25, 1555. This was eight years before the founding of Caracas. The official name was Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Nueva Valencia del Rey. The name comes from Valencia de Don Juan in Spain. The Spanish used a system called encomiendas. This system put native Indians under the control of Spanish settlers. This led to the displacement of natives from fertile lands. However, the populations also began to intermarry. In 1677, French pirates raided the city. They burned the City Hall and destroyed many early documents.
