Later, Akota became a town for trade with houses made of burnt bricks. The city was also a major center for Jainism. Many bronze statues and items were found at the old Akota site.

Vadodara is a major city located in the western Indian state of Gujarat.
The name Vadodara is deeply connected to the local environment. It is named for the abundance of banyan trees, which are also called "vad" trees. Some traditions suggest the name comes from the Sanskrit word "vatodara." This term means "in the belly of the banyan tree." The city was also known as Baroda. This name was used by English travelers and merchants in the 15th century. In 1974, the official name was changed back to Vadodara. Before this, the area was known as Chandanavati or Virakshetra, which means "Land of Warriors."
Human habitation in this region dates back to prehistoric times. At a suburb called Akota, archaeologists found microlith deposits. These small stone tools show that people lived there no later than 1000 BCE. These early inhabitants survived by hunting and fishing. By the first millennium CE, Akota became a commercial town. It featured houses built from burnt bricks and had links to far-reaching trade. Artifacts found there suggest connections to the Greco-Roman world. Akota was also a major center for Jainism. A large hoard of Jain bronzes was discovered at the site. These included images of tirthankaras and an elephant-shaped incense burner.
As time passed, the city grew in importance under various dynasties. During the 11th-century Chaulukya period, Vadodara transitioned from a village to a "pura," or city. The center of Jainism eventually shifted from Akota to Vadodara. In the 1300s, the city was part of the Delhi Sultanate. A group of Afghan nobles called the Amir-i Sadgan lived there. This group was named because each noble commanded 100 cavalry soldiers. Later, the city was part of the Gujarat Sultanate. In 1451, the city was sacked by troops from the Malwa Sultanate. During the reign of Mahmud Begada, a new city called Daulatabad was built near the old site. This new foundation became the basis for the modern city.
The climate in Vadodara is classified as a borderline tropical savanna climate. This means the weather is mostly dry except during the monsoon season. There are three distinct seasons: summer, monsoon, and winter. From March to July, the weather is hot. The average maximum temperature during this time is 37°C. From November to February, the climate is extremely dry. In January, cold northerly winds can make the days feel chilly. The southwest monsoon brings humidity from mid-June to mid-September. While the average annual rainfall is 800 mm, torrential rains can cause the Vishwamitri River to flood. These floods have been catastrophic in the past, such as in 2005 and 2008.
Today, Vadodara is a massive hub for industry and manufacturing. It is a major center for the pharmaceutical industry in Gujarat. The city also produces a large amount of power-transmission and distribution equipment. In fact, over 35% of India's manufacturers in this sector are located here. The city is also a center for making rail coaches. A Canadian company, Bombardier Transportation, has a plant in Savli. This plant makes coaches for the Delhi Metro and for Brisbane, Australia. Additionally, Tata Advanced Systems is building a C-295 transport aircraft facility. This project aims to make Vadodara a defense manufacturing hub. The first "Made in India" aircraft from this facility is expected in September 2026.
Socially and culturally, Vadodara is a diverse and educated city. According to the 2011 census, the literacy rate is 90.48%. Hinduism is the largest religion, practiced by 85.39% of the people. Islam is the second-largest religion at 11.20%. Most residents, about 71.37%, speak Gujarati as their first language. The city is also home to the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.
