As technology improved, powered cleaning systems began to emerge at the turn of the century. In 1898, John S. Thurman patented a "pneumatic carpet renovator." This system used an internal combustion engine and traveled on a horse-drawn wagon. It actually blew dust into a receptacle rather than using suction. By 1901, engineers like Hubert Cecil Booth and David T. Kenney developed suction-based powered cleaners. Booth's system, called "Puffing Billy," used a cloth filter to manage air. Kenney's design was a stationary system that used steam engines and long pipes. 
The development of the portable electric vacuum changed domestic life forever. In 1907, James Spangler invented a portable electric model using a soap box and a pillowcase. He sold his patent in 1908 to William Henry Hoover. The Hoover Company later redesigned the machine with a steel casing and casters. Their first commercial model was the 1908 Model O, which cost $60. 
Today, vacuum cleaners come in many specialized configurations for different needs. Canister models are very popular in Europe because they offer great flexibility. 
Recent decades have introduced even more advanced technologies to the market. In 1997, Electrolux demonstrated the first autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner.
