The history of the region began long before modern cities existed.

The Selk'nam people arrived in Tierra del Fuego approximately 10,000 years ago. Later, the Yaghan people occupied the area where Ushuaia now sits.

British missionaries were among the first Europeans to establish a presence. In 1869, Waite Hockin Stirling stayed with the Yaghan people. Thomas Bridges later became a fluent speaker of the Yaghan language. He even created a custom alphabet to write a dictionary of the language. This important manuscript was eventually published after many years of effort.

On 12 October 1884, Augusto Lasserre founded the sub-division of Ushuaia. In 1885, Don Feliz M Paz was named Governor and named Ushuaia as the capital. To help establish Argentine sovereignty, the government promoted a penal colony for re-offenders.

This prison received its first inmates in 1896. The prisoners became forced colonists who helped build the growing town. They used timber from local forests to construct buildings. They also built a railway, which is now a famous tourist attraction. This is known as the End of the World Train.
