Uropygi are a specialized order of arachnids. They are commonly known as whip scorpions or vinegaroons. 

The anatomy of a whip scorpion is quite complex. Their body features an opisthosoma, which is the abdomen, consisting of 12 segments. The first segment forms a pedicel. The following eight segments possess dorsal tergites, which are protective plates. The final three segments are fused into closed rings. This structure forms the pygidium, a small plate at the rear. The pygidium ends in a flagellum, a whip-like tail made of 30 to 40 units. 
Predatory behavior is central to their survival. Whip scorpions are nocturnal carnivores. They hunt mostly for insects, millipedes, scorpions, and terrestrial isopods. Some species, such as those in the genus Mastigoproctus, may even eat small vertebrates. 
The life cycle of a female whip scorpion involves intense maternal care. After mating, the female digs a large burrow and seals herself inside. She can produce up to 40 eggs within a protective, moist membranous broodsac. This sac remains attached to her genital operculum and the fifth segment of her ventral opisthosoma. To protect the eggs, she arches her abdomen upward. This prevents the broodsac from touching the ground for several months. 
History shows how our understanding of these animals has evolved. Carl Linnaeus first described a whip scorpion in 1758. He initially classified it as Phalangium caudatum. In 1802, Pierre André Latreille established the genus Thelyphonus. He noted that the name meant "who kills." Later, in 1804, Latreille used the name Thelyphonida for the order. In 1883, Tamerlan Thorell introduced the name Uropygi. This name stems from Ancient Greek words meaning "tail rump." 
Taxonomy for Uropygi can be quite complicated. Originally, Uropygi, Amblypygi, and Schizomida were grouped into one order called Pedipalpi. Scientists later divided this group into two orders: Amblypygi and Uropygi. Eventually, Schizomida was split away into its own separate order. Depending on the system used, the remaining group is called either Uropygi or Thelyphonida. Phylogenetic studies suggest that Amblypygi, Uropygi, and Schizomida are all closely related. It is believed that Uropygi and Schizomida diverged in the late Carboniferous period. This likely occurred in the tropics of the supercontinent Pangaea.
Size and habitat vary across the different species. Most whip scorpions are relatively small in length. However, the largest species in the genus Mastigoproctus can reach 15 centimeters. One heavy specimen was recorded at 12.4 grams.
