The system works by managing many different types of schools. It includes nine universities for academic learning. It also has five independent health institutions. Some of these focus on medical training. For example, the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center is a special health institution. It is one of six schools at UT Health Houston. Other medical schools belong to the academic universities. The UT Tyler School of Medicine began its work in 2023.

Many schools have joined the system over many years. In 2013, two schools became one. UT Brownsville and UT Pan American merged to form UT Rio Grande Valley. This new school serves the whole Rio Grande Valley area. In 2021, UT Tyler and a health center merged. This helped create a new medical school in East Texas. Most recently, Stephen F. Austin State University joined the system. The Texas Legislature approved this in 2023.

Different schools have their own unique names and places. The University of Texas at Austin is in Austin. It was established in 1883. It has over 52,000 students. UT Arlington is in the Arlington and Fort Worth area. It joined the system in 1965. UT Dallas is located in the Richardson area. It was founded in 1961. Each school has its own sports teams too. For example, the UT Austin teams are called the Longhorns.

Learning at these schools brings many different people together. The student population is very diverse. About 50% of the students are Hispanic. About 23% are White. Another 14% are Asian. About 8% of the students are Black. There are also many international students. They make up about 3% of the total. This mix of people helps everyone learn about the world. It makes the university system a very active place to live and study.

The scale of the UT System is immense. It supports more than 250,000 enrolled students. The system also employs over 21,000 faculty members. In the medical field, it employs more than 83,000 health care professionals, researchers, and support staff. One of its most important features is its endowment. An endowment is a large fund of money used to support the system's goals. As of the 2024 fiscal year, the UT System endowment was $47.5 billion. This is the largest endowment of any public university system in the United States.

The system is divided into two main types of institutions. First, there are the academic universities. These schools confer various degrees to students. For example, the University of Texas at Austin was established in 1883. It has a total enrollment of 52,384 students. The UT System also includes five independent health institutions. These are separate from the four-year academic schools. Examples include the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center and the UT Medical Branch at Galveston. Some medical schools are part of academic institutions, like the Dell Medical School at UT Austin.

History shows that the UT System has grown through both new additions and mergers. In 2013, a law approved the creation of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. This new institution was formed by merging UT Brownsville and UT Pan American. This merger allowed one single institution to serve the entire Rio Grande Valley. In 2021, a different merger occurred in East Texas. The University of Texas at Tyler and the UT Health Science Center at Tyler became one unified institution. This helped establish the first medical school in that region in 2023.

Another significant change happened recently with Stephen F. Austin State University. In late 2022, the school's Board of Regents decided to join the UT System. This decision followed input from students, faculty, and alumni. The Texas Legislature approved this addition during its 2023 session. The law required the school to be technically dissolved and then immediately reconstituted. It kept its original name but added a phrase identifying it as a member of the UT System.

There have also been attempts to reorganize parts of the system. In 2001, the Texas Legislature proposed a bill to merge several Dallas-Fort Worth institutions. This plan would have combined UT Dallas, UT Arlington, and UT Southwestern. The goal was to create one flagship-level university for the metroplex. However, the bill failed to pass. UT Arlington objected because it wanted to keep its own identity. In Houston, the system once considered building a new research campus. They purchased 300 acres of land for $215 million in 2015. However, the UT System eventually cancelled those plans in 2017.

The student body of the UT System is very diverse. This diversity reflects the different populations in Texas and the United States. According to 2022 data, 50% of the students are Hispanic. This is higher than the 40.2% Hispanic population in Texas from the 2020 Census. Additionally, 23% of students are White, which is lower than the 39.8% in Texas. Asian students make up 14% of the population, which is much higher than the 5.7% in Texas. Black students represent 8% of the students. International students make up 3% of the total enrollment. This variety of backgrounds creates a unique environment for all learners.
