They wanted the normal school to become the second UC campus. They faced resistance from UC Berkeley alumni and some state leaders. However, supporters used the state constitution to pressure the Board of Regents. In 1919, Governor William D. Stephens signed Assembly Bill 626 into law. 
The modern Westwood campus opened to students in 1929. 

UCLA is also a powerhouse in athletics and high-level research. Student-athletes compete as the Bruins in the Big Ten Conference. 

The impact of UCLA extends to the most advanced levels of human knowledge. Many people affiliated with the university have achieved incredible honors. These include 19 Nobel laureates and 11 Rhodes scholars.
