Students can also study in places like the Poppelsdorf Palace. This palace now holds science departments and a botanical garden. This mix of old and new helps create a unique place to study.

The history of the school goes back a long time. It started as an academy in 1777. This academy was founded by Maximilian Frederick of Königsegg-Rothenfels. Later, the Emperor Joseph II gave the academy the right to grant degrees in 1784. However, the academy closed in 1798 during the French Revolutionary Wars. Much later, King Frederick William III of Prussia founded the new university on 18 October 1818. It was the sixth university founded in Prussia. It was built to be a modern place for research.

History was not always easy for the university.

The university does not have one single, centralized campus. Instead, it manages 371 different buildings spread throughout the city. The main building is the Kurfürstliches Schloss. This was originally a residential palace built between 1697 and 1705. It now houses the faculty of humanities and theology. Other departments are located in various historical and modern sites. For example, the Poppelsdorf Palace serves science departments and a botanical garden.

The medical school is located on the Venusberg hill.

The university's origins trace back to the late 18th century. Its forerunner was an academy founded in 1777. Maximilian Frederick of Königsegg-Rothenfels established this academy. It was nonsectarian and followed the spirit of the Enlightenment. In 1784, Emperor Joseph II granted it the right to award degrees. This turned the academy into a university. However, the academy closed in 1798 during the French Revolutionary Wars. This happened after France occupied the left bank of the Rhine.

A new era began under Prussian rule. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the Rhineland became part of Prussia. King Frederick William III then founded the Rhine University on 18 October 1818. This was the sixth Prussian university to be established. It was designed to be a modern research university. It followed the ideas of Wilhelm von Humboldt. This philosophy emphasized the unity of teaching and research. The university was shared equally between two Christian denominations.

History brought difficult challenges to the institution.

Following the Nazi takeover in 1933, the university underwent a process called Gleichschaltung. This transformed the school into a Nazi educational institution. The previous system of self-governing administration was replaced by a military-style hierarchy. Many Jewish professors and students were expelled.

The mathematician Felix Hausdorff was expelled in 1935. He later committed suicide after learning of his impending deportation. During World War II, the university suffered heavy damage. An air raid on 18 October 1944 destroyed the main building.

The university saw a major recovery after the war. It reopened on 17 November 1945 in the British occupation zone. Heinrich Matthias Konen served as the first post-war president. He had previously been expelled for opposing Nazism. Demand for education was extremely high during this time. In 1945, over 10,000 people applied for only 2,500 places. The university expanded significantly during the 1960s and 1970s. New facilities like the Juridicum were opened to support growth. In 1991, the relocation of the German capital to Berlin brought new research funding.

Today, the university is a global leader in scientific research.
