The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a specialized naval infantry service branch.
To function effectively, the Marines use a specific organizational structure. They operate through a Marine Air-Ground Task Force, or MAGTF. This structure integrates four distinct elements under a single command. First, there is a ground combat element. Second, there is an aviation combat element. Third, there is a logistics combat element. Finally, a common command element directs all these parts. This integration allows the Corps to deploy rapidly to almost anywhere in the world. They can often arrive within just a few days.
The Corps relies on several specialized types of equipment and doctrine. They utilize a large number of Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL) aircraft. This includes 313 V-22 Ospreys, 183 F-35B Lightning IIs, and 78 AV-8B Harrier IIs. Many of these tactical aviation squadrons are embedded in Navy carrier air wings. To maintain speed, the military uses the Maritime Pre-Positioning System. This system uses fleets of container ships stationed around the world. These ships carry enough equipment and supplies to support a force for 30 days.
The history of the Marine Corps began in the late 18th century. Two battalions of Continental Marines were formed on November 10, 1775, in Philadelphia.
Modern Marine doctrine emphasizes flexibility and the infantry. A central principle is that "Every Marine is a rifleman." This means all members receive infantry combat training regardless of their specific job. Even pilots and specialists undergo this training. This culture ensures that every member can support ground combat. The Corps also uses a concept called "commander's intent." This method specifies the desired end state of a mission. However, it leaves the specific method of execution open to the leaders on the ground. This allows for flexible execution during complex operations.
The Marine Corps performs many duties beyond traditional combat. They provide essential support to the Department of State. Marine Security Guards protect American embassies and consulates at over 140 posts worldwide.
As of December 2024, the Marine Corps maintains a significant global presence. There are approximately 169,000 active duty members. Additionally, there are about 33,000 personnel serving in the reserve. The Corps remains a vital part of the American military system. They combine the mobility of the Navy with specialized land combat skills. This allows them to act as a rapid response force for international incidents. Whether through sea-based power projection or embassy security, the Marines remain a highly integrated and mobile force.
