The history of the land began long before the United States existed. Paleo-Indians moved from North Asia at least 15,000 years ago. They formed many different and clever civilizations. Later, people from Europe arrived to build colonies. The Spanish started a colony in Florida in 1513. The British built the Virginia Colony in 1607. This was one of the original Thirteen Colonies. During this time, many Africans were brought to the colonies as enslaved people to work on plantations.

The colonies eventually fought a war to become their own nation. They wanted to be free from the rule of the British Crown. This was called the American Revolution.

The colonies won the war between 1775 and 1783. This victory helped the new country grow toward the west. Later, the country faced a hard time called the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. This war was fought between the North and the South over slavery. After the North won, slavery was ended across the whole nation.

The nation also maintains sovereignty over five major island territories and various uninhabited islands in Oceania and the Caribbean. As a megadiverse country, it possesses the third-largest land area and the third-largest population in the world. This population currently exceeds 341 million people.

The history of the region began with the migration of Paleo-Indians from North Asia at least 15,000 years ago. These early inhabitants formed various sophisticated civilizations, such as the Mississippian and Ancestral Puebloan cultures. By the time European colonizers arrived, the Native population was estimated to be between 500,000 and nearly 10 million people. European exploration brought different nations to the continent. Spain established Spanish Florida in 1513, which was the first European colony in the continental United States.

Later, British colonization began with the 1607 settlement of Virginia, marking the start of the Thirteen Colonies.

During the colonial era, the economy of the Southern Colonies relied heavily on the labor of enslaved Africans. This period also saw the rise of various European powers, including the Dutch in New Nederland and the French in areas like New Orleans. Tensions eventually grew between the British Crown and the colonies. The colonists protested against taxation without representation in Parliament. These protests evolved into the American Revolution.

The Revolutionary War lasted from 1775 to 1783 and resulted in the Declaration of Independence. This victory established U.S. sovereignty and encouraged westward expansion, though it also led to the further dispossession of Native inhabitants.

The United States faced a profound internal crisis during the 19th century. A sharp division between the North and South over the institution of slavery caused 11 Southern states to attempt to secede. They formed the Confederate States of America, leading to the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865.

Following the Union's victory and the reunification of the country, slavery was abolished nationally. By 1900, the United States had emerged as a great power. This status was further solidified by its involvement in World War I. The nation entered World War II following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The mid-20th century was defined by the Cold War. After World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union became rival superpowers. They competed for international influence and ideological dominance for several decades. This era of competition ended in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. This left the United States as the world's sole superpower. In more recent history, the country launched the war on terror following the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The American government operates as a representative democracy. It uses a constitution to create a separation of powers among three distinct branches. These are the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The United States Congress is a bicameral legislature. It includes the House of Representatives, which is based on population, and the Senate, which provides equal representation for each state.

Under the system of federalism, the 50 states hold substantial autonomy. Additionally, 574 Native American tribes hold sovereignty rights across 326 reservations.

Economically, the United States is a dominant global force. It has held the title of the world's largest economy since approximately 1890. The country accounts for over a quarter of the nominal global GDP. While it is the wealthiest country with high disposable household income, it also experiences high levels of wealth inequality. The nation is a leader in innovation, higher education, and economic competitiveness. This is evident in hubs like Silicon Valley. The culture is also highly diverse due to centuries of global immigration.
