The peninsula covers about 252,000 square kilometers. Its northernmost point is Cape Wolstenholme. This spot is the northernmost point in all of Quebec. It is also the northernmost point of any province in Canada.

The land here looks very different from a forest. It is mostly treeless tundra. Many rivers and glacial lakes sit on the land. These rivers and lakes flow east and west in straight lines. The ground has thick permafrost. This means the soil stays frozen. This frozen ground makes it hard to use normal building ways.

This place has a very old story. A huge ice sheet once lived here. Scientists believe this ice sheet spread over most of North America from this spot. The ice did not melt away until 6,500 years ago. The rocks under the ground are also very old. Some are Archean rocks from 2.7 to 2.9 billion years ago.

There is even a place called the Pingualuit impact crater. This is a hole made by a space rock hitting the Earth.

About 10,000 people live on the peninsula. Most of them, about 90 percent, are Inuit. These people live in 12 villages along the coast. The largest village is named Kuujjuaq. It is the capital for the Kativik Regional Government. This government looks after the whole peninsula.

Some islands off the coast belong to a different area called Nunavut. The Unavuk Peninsula is part of a proposed area called Nunavik.

The weather in Ungava is extremely cold. This happens because of the Labrador Current. This is a cold ocean current. It keeps the area much colder in the summer than other places.

Many rivers and glacial lakes cut through the land. These water features generally flow in a parallel east-to-west direction. The region is part of the Canadian Shield. This is a large area of ancient rock. The ground contains thick permafrost. Permafrost is soil that remains frozen for long periods. This frozen layer makes conventional building techniques difficult to use. The climate is classified as extremely cold. This is due to the Labrador Current. This ocean current keeps the region much colder in summer than other places at the same latitude.

Geology provides a window into the deep history of the Earth.

The peninsula sits where the Rae Province meets the Superior Province. The base consists of Archean rocks. These rocks are between 2.7 and 2.9 billion years old. They belong to the Douglas Harbour Domain. Above these rocks are Paleoproterozoic supracrustal sequences. These layers are about 1.8 to 2.1 billion years old. Diabase dykes also intrude the area. These are rock formations that are 2.0 to 2.2 billion years old. The rocks form parts of the Ungava and Labrador troughs.

Complex movements shaped these ancient rocks. In the zone east of the Labrador Trough axis, deformation occurred. This process reworked the Archean rocks and the diabase dykes. The metamorphic conditions change as you move from west to east. This means the rocks change due to heat and pressure. They move from middle amphibolite facies to granulite facies. Scientists used U–Pb isotope analyses of zircon to study this. These tests showed secondary ages around 1790 million years ago. This suggests a major tectono-metamorphic event. This event likely resulted from a continental collision.

The peninsula has a significant glacial history.

It was once covered by the Laurentide Ice Sheet. This was a massive layer of ice. Scientists believe this peninsula was the prehistoric center for that ice. The ice sheet spread from here across most of North America. The peninsula did not fully deglaciate until 6,500 years ago. This happened 11,500 years after the Last Glacial Maximum. One notable feature is the Pingualuit impact crater. This is a site where a space rock hit the Earth.

About 10,000 people live on the peninsula today.

Approximately 90 percent of the population is Inuit. These residents live in 12 different villages along the coast. The largest village is Kuujjuaq. It serves as the capital for the Kativik Regional Government. This government manages the entire peninsula. Some offshore islands belong to the Nunavut Territory. The Unavuk Peninsula is part of the proposed Nunavik autonomous area. Travel to the region is mostly by air. Ships can visit only when the sea ice breaks up.

Nature has left unique marks on the fauna here.

The Ungava brown bear once lived in this region. This was an extinct population of the grizzly bear. The peninsula is also home to the Ungava seal. This animal is a subspecies of the Harbor seal. These animals are part of the unique biological history of the Arctic. The combination of ancient geology and extreme climate makes the peninsula a unique place in the world.
