While he was a sultan, he was also a great mathematician and astronomer. He spoke five different languages, including Arabic and Persian. He wanted his cities to be centers for learning and art. Because of this, he helped create a time called the Timurid Renaissance. He turned places like Samarkand into hubs for smart people to gather.

To study the sky, Ulugh Beg built a massive observatory in Samarkand. He worked on this project between 1424 and 1429.

Since telescopes had not been invented yet, he had to find another way to be precise. He built a giant tool called a Fakhri sextant. This device helped him measure the transit altitudes of stars. This means he measured how high a star sits above the horizon. By making the instrument very large, he could make his measurements much more accurate. This was a clever way to see the heavens clearly without a lens.

Ulugh Beg's work in the stars changed how people saw the universe. He used his tools to create a massive star catalogue. This was a detailed list of the positions of many stars. His famous work, the Zij-i-Sultani, included 994 stars. He found mistakes in older maps made by the scholar Ptolemy. By checking the data himself, he made a much better guide for others. He also used math to find the length of a year. He calculated it to be about 365.257 days. This was incredibly close to the true number.

His scientific mind also helped him understand the Earth itself. He studied the axial tilt, which is how the Earth leans as it spins. He found this tilt to be about 23.5 degrees.

Ulugh Beg was also a master of trigonometry. This is a type of math used to study triangles. He wrote math tables that were accurate to eight decimal places. These tables helped other scientists do their work more easily. His math was so good that it was used for many years after he died.

Even though he was a great scientist, being a ruler was much harder for him. He struggled to keep control over his large empire. In 1449, his own son, Abdal-Latif, rebelled against him. This led to a sad end for the great astronomer.

He was a polyglot, capable of speaking five languages: Arabic, Persian, Chaghatai Turkic, Mongolian, and some Chinese. His reign helped drive the Timurid Renaissance, a period of great cultural and intellectual growth. He focused on turning his territories into major centers for science and the arts.

To achieve this, Ulugh Beg transformed the cities of Samarkand and Bukhara into hubs of learning. Between 1417 and 1420, he constructed a madrasah, or an institute of higher learning, on Registan Square in Samarkand. This building still exists today and served as a place for scholars to gather. He invited many famous Islamic mathematicians and astronomers to study and teach there. His most notable teacher was Qadi Zada al-Rumi, and his most famous student was the astronomer Ali Qushchi.

Through these institutions, he fostered a community dedicated to rigorous scientific inquiry.

Ulugh Beg's most significant scientific achievement was the construction of the Ulugh Beg Observatory in Samarkand. He built this massive facility between 1424 and 1429.

It was considered one of the finest observatories in the Islamic world and the largest in Central Asia. Because telescopes had not yet been invented, Ulugh Beg had to find other ways to ensure precision. He relied on massive physical instruments to observe the heavens. One of the most important tools was the Fakhri sextant, a giant instrument used to measure the transit altitudes of stars. This measurement determined the maximum height of a star above the horizon. By building the sextant with a very large radius, he could achieve much higher accuracy in his observations.

Using the instruments at his observatory, Ulugh Beg conducted a massive study of the stars. He discovered that many existing star catalogues, including those based on the work of the ancient scholar Ptolemy, contained errors. He decided to perform his own independent analysis to correct these mistakes. This resulted in the creation of the Zij-i-Sultani, a star catalogue published around 1437. This catalogue contained the positions of 994 stars. His work was so precise that it is often considered the greatest star catalogue between the eras of Ptolemy and Tycho Brahe. He even included 27 stars from the earlier work of Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi that were too far south to be seen from Samarkand.

Ulugh Beg's mathematical precision extended to his measurements of time and the Earth. In 1437, he calculated the length of the sidereal year, which is the time it takes Earth to orbit the sun. He determined it to be 365.2570370 days. This calculation was incredibly accurate, with an error of only about 58 seconds. He also calculated the tropical year, which is the time between successive equinoxes. His value for the tropical year had an error of only 25 seconds. This was actually more accurate than the later estimate made by the famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. Furthermore, he determined the Earth's axial tilt, the angle at which the planet leans, to be 23.5047 degrees.

Beyond astronomy, Ulugh Beg was a master of mathematics, specifically trigonometry. He used these mathematical principles to create highly accurate tables for sine and tangent values. These tables were correct to at least eight decimal places. This level of detail was vital for other scientists to perform complex calculations regarding celestial movements. His ability to blend high-level mathematics with physical observation allowed him to reach conclusions that remained respected for centuries. His scientific legacy is preserved in various modern editions of his star catalogues, including those published in 1843 and 1917.

Despite his intellectual successes, Ulugh Beg struggled with the political challenges of ruling the Timurid Empire. He faced several military conflicts, including a campaign against the Golden Horde in 1427 that resulted in a defeat. His political authority was ultimately undermined by family members. In 1449, following a period of civil war and rebellion by his son, Abdal-Latif, Ulugh Beg was assassinated.

While his political reign was short and difficult, his contributions to science remain immense. He proved that even without modern lenses, careful observation and advanced mathematics could unlock the secrets of the universe.
