While the United States has historically won many world titles, other nations are very strong. Canada, Japan, Australia, and several European countries are notable competitors. In 2024, American teams won all three divisions at the world championship. The sport is also gaining recognition in academic settings. In 2017, Vermont became the first U.S. state to recognize ultimate as a varsity high school sport. In 2019, Oklahoma Christian University launched the first American varsity program with full-ride scholarships.

Technological changes in equipment have significantly impacted how the game is played. Early players used the "Master" disc, which was relatively light and flimsy. In 1977, Wham-O introduced the "80 Mold," a 165-gram disc that provided better stability in the wind. This allowed for more advanced throws, such as the "flick" or the "hammer." Later, in 1981, Discraft introduced the Ultrastar, a 175-gram disc.

The Ultrastar was specified as the official disc for UPA tournament play in 1991 and remains a standard today.
