His school friends even gave him the nickname "The Philosopher." However, his family faced significant hardships after his father died when Thant was fourteen. The loss led to difficult financial times for his mother and brothers. Thant worked hard to fulfill his duties to his family while pursuing his education.
Before joining the United Nations, Thant built a career in the Burmese government. He was a close friend and advisor to U Nu, the first Prime Minister of Burma. 
Thant's appointment as Secretary-General followed a sudden tragedy. In September 1961, the previous Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjöld, died in an air crash. 
One of Thant's most critical achievements occurred during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. This was a moment when the world faced the possibility of a nuclear war.
Thant also managed complex conflicts in Africa. In December 1962, he dealt with a civil war in the Congo. Katangan secessionists had been attacking United Nations forces. To address this, Thant ordered Operation Grandslam. This operation was designed to give UN forces complete freedom of movement throughout Katanga. This action helped to end the secessionist insurgency in the region. Thant was reappointed as Secretary-General on December 2, 1966, by a unanimous vote of the Security Council. During his second term, he was known for criticizing U.S. conduct in the Vietnam War.
During his tenure, the United Nations underwent significant growth. Thant oversaw the entry of many newly independent states from Africa and Asia into the organization. He worked to ensure these new nations had a voice in international affairs. Thant eventually refused to serve a third term and retired in 1971. He died of lung cancer in 1974. Even after his death, his legacy remained a point of great pride for the people of Burma. He remains remembered as a man who helped navigate the world through its most dangerous decades.
