The American Point System is unique because of its specific economic history. It adopted the "Johnson Pica" as its standard unit. This pica was named after Lawrence Johnson of the Mackellar, Smiths and Jordan type foundry. The choice was practical rather than purely mathematical. Re-tooling hundreds of foundry molds to a new standard would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. By adopting the existing Johnson Pica, foundries saved significant money. 
Modern digital typography has introduced new ways to measure text. Desktop publishing software and digital displays use different mathematical equations. Many systems use a pica defined as 1/6 of a modern inch. This equals about 4.233 mm. Digital systems also use an incredibly small unit called a "twip." One twip is 1/20 of a point, or 1/1440 of an inch. This tiny measurement is roughly 0.017638 mm. These precise units allow computers to place text with extreme accuracy on screens and paper.
Typographic units connect the physical history of printing to modern digital technology. While the tools have changed from metal type to pixels, the logic of division remains. For instance, the Japanese use a unit called the "kyu" for their characters. One kyu is 0.25 mm. This allows them to use metric-sized type for European languages as well.
