It went to the Russian Defense Ministry from the Aviakor factory.

To achieve its performance, the Tu-154 uses a specific engine arrangement. It is powered by three rear-mounted, low-bypass turbofan engines.

The middle engine, known as the number-two engine, uses an S-duct. An S-duct is a curved air intake that directs air to the engine. The aircraft has a high thrust-to-weight ratio. This means the engines provide a lot of power compared to the plane's mass. This gives the Tu-154 excellent performance, though it uses more fuel than some other planes. The original models used Kuznetsov NK-8-2 engines. Later, the Tu-154M model used more efficient Soloviev D-30KU-154 engines.

The design of the wings and landing gear allows for unique operations. The wings feature a 35-degree sweepback at the quarter-chord line. They also have anhedral, which is a downward sweep. Most Western airliners use dihedral, or an upward sweep. This anhedral design makes the plane more resistant to Dutch roll. Dutch roll is a type of wobbling motion in the air.

Many different variants of the Tu-154 were produced over its long history. The Tu-154A was an early upgrade with more fuel tanks and better engines. The Tu-154B was created in 1975 to fix wing cracks found in earlier models. This version had a stronger wing and a higher maximum takeoff weight of 100,000 kg. The Tu-154B-2 was a modernization that could cooperate with Western navigation systems.

The Tu-154S was a specialized freighter version with a strengthened floor. Finally, the Tu-154M was the most highly upgraded version. It entered mass production in 1984 and used more efficient engines. It also featured new flaps to help reduce noise during approach.

In total, 1,025 Tu-154 aircraft were built. As of late 2009, 214 of them were still in service. The production of the 154M model continued even after 2006. The last serial Tu-154 was delivered in February 2013. This final aircraft went to the Russian Defense Ministry from the Aviakor factory.

It featured upgraded avionics and a VIP interior. While many older models are being retired, some versions have been modified. For instance, the Tu-154M can be fitted with hush kits. These kits allow the engines to meet modern noise regulations.
