The Tupolev Tu-154 is a large jet plane. 

The plane has three engines on the back. These are turbofan engines, which are a type of jet engine. The middle engine uses an S-duct. This is a curved path that lets air reach the engine.
The Tu-154 can land on rough ground. It can even land on gravel airfields. This is possible because of its special landing gear. The gear has many large, soft tires. These tires help the plane land on bumpy surfaces. This helped the plane fly in the cold Arctic regions.

The Soviet Ministry of Aircraft Industry chose the Tu-154 because it met these needs. The project began in 1964 with Komissarov as the first project chief. In 1975, the lead role passed to another designer. The aircraft first flew on 4 October 1968. 
Many different variants of the Tu-154 were produced over its long history. The Tu-154A was an early upgrade with more fuel tanks and better engines. The Tu-154B was created in 1975 to fix wing cracks found in earlier models. This version had a stronger wing and a higher maximum takeoff weight of 100,000 kg. The Tu-154B-2 was a modernization that could cooperate with Western navigation systems. 
In total, 1,025 Tu-154 aircraft were built. As of late 2009, 214 of them were still in service. The production of the 154M model continued even after 2006. The last serial Tu-154 was delivered in February 2013. This final aircraft went to the Russian Defense Ministry from the Aviakor factory. 
The Tu-154 is connected to many different aspects of aviation and geography. Its ability to land on gravel made it vital for the Arctic regions. Other airliners could not operate in those extreme northern conditions. The aircraft's design also reflects the history of flight crew requirements. Originally, it was designed for a three-person crew. However, a navigator was soon found to be necessary. This led to the addition of a fourth seat for a navigator. As technology advances, the profession of navigator is becoming obsolete. Modern upgrades now include GPS and digital traffic collision systems.
