Later, in 1917, Levi-Civita introduced the concept of parallel transport. This idea was used in Riemannian geometry. It helped simplify how mathematicians calculate the curvature of a Riemannian manifold.
Levi-Civita's career was marked by high academic honors. He graduated from the University of Padova in 1892. He later held prestigious positions at the University of Pavia and the University of Rome. At Rome, he held the Chair of Higher Analysis and the Chair of Mechanics. He was an international honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1917. In 1922, he received the Sylvester Medal from the Royal Society. He was also a foreign member of the Royal Society as of 1930.
He is perhaps most famous for his intellectual connection to Albert Einstein. Between 1915 and 1917, the two men exchanged many letters. Levi-Civita actually discovered mathematical errors in Einstein's early use of tensor calculus. He wrote to Einstein to help correct these mistakes regarding the theory of relativity. Einstein deeply respected Levi-Civita's precision. Einstein once remarked on the elegance of Levi-Civita's computational methods. He compared Levi-Civita's math to riding a horse while others had to walk on foot.
Levi-Civita also made contributions to the field of quantum mechanics. In 1933, he contributed to the work involving Paul Dirac's equations. He also developed the Levi-Civita field. This is a unique system of numbers that includes infinitesimal quantities. These are values that are smaller than any standard positive number but are not zero. His textbook, "The Absolute Differential Calculus," remains a standard text for students today. It has been translated into several different languages over the last century.
In 1936, Levi-Civita traveled to Princeton in the United States. He lived there for one year at the invitation of Einstein. However, he returned to Italy as the risk of war in Europe grew. His life took a difficult turn due to political changes in his home country. In 1938, the Italian Fascist government enacted race laws. These laws stripped Levi-Civita of his professorship. He was also removed from all scientific societies. He lived in isolation in Rome until he died on 29 December 1941.
