Tuff is a specific type of volcanic rock formed from ejected ash. It is a vital part of the Earth's geological history. Scientists classify a rock as tuff if it contains more than 75% volcanic ash. If the ash content is lower, between 25% and 75%, it is called tuffaceous. For example, tuffaceous sandstone contains a significant amount of ash but is not pure tuff.

This material is important because it records the power of past eruptions. It also provides a soft, workable stone for human civilization.

The creation of tuff begins with an explosive volcanic eruption. Inside a volcano, magma contains dissolved gases. As magma moves toward the surface, the pressure decreases. This causes the gases to come out of solution rapidly. The expanding gases blow the magma apart into solid particles called tephra.

If these particles are smaller than 2 mm, they are called volcanic ash. Ash can be categorized as fine ash, which is smaller than 0.0625 mm, or coarse ash, which is larger. These particles can travel through the air in eruption columns or rush down slopes in destructive pyroclastic flows.

There are several ways this ash becomes solid rock, a process called lithification. One method involves extreme heat. If the ash particles are hot enough when they settle, they weld together. This creates a material known as welded tuff.

During welding, glass shards and pumice fragments deform and compact. This results in a unique structure called a eutaxitic fabric. Another method involves chemical changes. Volcanic glass is thermodynamically unstable. When it reacts with groundwater or seawater, it leaches metals and calcium. New minerals like zeolites, clays, and calcite then crystallize to cement the ash into rock.

Tuff can be categorized by what it is made of. Vitric tuff is composed mainly of shards of volcanic glass. These shards are often irregular or triangular in shape. Crystal tuffs consist mostly of individual crystals. Lithic tuffs are made from pulverized rock fragments.

The chemical makeup also dictates the name. Tuffs can be rhyolitic, andesitic, or basaltic depending on their silica content. Furthermore, scientists classify them by where they were deposited. Examples include lacustrine tuff from lakes, subaerial tuff from land, or submarine tuff from the ocean.

Humans have utilized the softness of tuff for thousands of years. The Romans frequently used it for large construction projects.

This is the highest rating for an eruption in the last 10,000 years. The volume of this deposit was at least 1,000 times larger than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.
