Tsinghua University is a major public research institution located in Beijing, China.

The university functions through a complex structure of specialized academic units. It contains 21 schools and 59 departments that cover a wide range of subjects.
The history of the institution began during a time of great change in China.
In the mid-20th century, the university underwent significant structural shifts. After 1949, the Chinese government reorganized higher education to follow a Soviet-style system. In 1952, Tsinghua was streamlined into a polytechnic institute. This meant the school focused almost entirely on engineering and the natural sciences. During this era, the university also started a political counselor program. This program involved graduates working to manage student organizations. In 1966, Tsinghua researchers played a vital role in China's technological progress. They helped the country transition from vacuum-tube computers to transistorized computers.
From the 1980s onward, Tsinghua moved back toward a multidisciplinary model. It began re-incorporating various schools to encourage collaboration between different fields. This led to the creation of the Tsinghua Law School and the School of Economics and Management. The university also built strong international ties during this time. In 1996, it partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for management studies. In 1998, it became the first Chinese university to offer an American law program through Temple University. These partnerships helped the university grow into a global academic player.
Today, the university is known for its massive scale and influence. In 2016, its expenditures reached RMB 13.7 billion. This was the largest budget of any university in China at that time. The campus also hosts the Schwarzman Scholars program, which was established in 2016. This program has an endowment of nearly US$400 million. It selects 100 to 200 global leaders every year to study at a dedicated residential college. The university also features unique educational experiments like Xinya College. This college uses a liberal arts tradition to help students explore many different subjects.
Tsinghua University is deeply connected to the leadership of China. Many prominent political figures are alumni of the school. For example, current leader Xi Jinping graduated in 1979 with a degree in chemical engineering. Former leader Hu Jintao graduated with a degree in hydraulic engineering. The university also attracts world leaders as guest speakers. Notable visitors have included Bill Clinton and Tony Blair. Through its research, its many schools, and its famous graduates, Tsinghua remains a cornerstone of global education and politics.
