The forest works in many different layers. At the very top are the emergent trees. These are the tallest trees that poke out above everything else. They are home to birds like toucans and the harpy eagle. Below them is the canopy, which acts like a thick roof. This canopy layer is home to many apes and monkeys. Under the canopy is the understory where snakes and big cats live. Finally, the forest floor is where gorillas and deer walk. 
Scientists use different names for these special forest types. One type is the lowland equatorial evergreen rainforest. These receive more than 2000 mm of rain every year. Another type is the tropical seasonal forest. These forests have a wet season and a dry season. Some trees in these forests drop their leaves during the dry winter. There are also montane rain forests in cool mountains. Some of these are called cloud forests because of the low clouds.
These forests are found in many parts of the world. You can find large patches near the equator. The Amazon Basin and the Congo Basin are very famous areas. The Indo-Malayan Archipelago is another big home for these forests. In South America, Brazil and Peru have many rainforests. Rainforests now cover less than 6% of the Earth's land. In one square kilometer, you might find more than 1,000 different tree species. 
Even though these forests are huge, they face big problems. People are clearing the land to make space for farms. Other times, people cut down trees for commercial logging. This is a very hard job for the planet to handle. An area the size of Ireland is destroyed every few years. We can see how important these forests are by looking at the many animals they protect. From giant butterflies to tiny bugs, life thrives in every layer.

The forest is organized into five distinct vertical layers. The top layer contains the emergent crowns of the tallest trees. These emergent trees poke out above the rest of the forest. Below them is the overstory canopy. This is followed by a medium layer of canopy and a lower canopy. Next is the shrub level, which sits above the forest floor. Each layer creates a unique home for different organisms. 
Different animals occupy these specific layers to find food and shelter. The emergent trees are the realm of hornbills, toucans, and the harpy eagle. Biodiversity is generally highest within the forest canopy itself. This area is home to many animals, including monkeys and apes. Below the canopy, a lower understory hosts snakes and big cats. The forest floor is relatively clear of undergrowth because the thick canopy blocks the light. In this open space, animals like deer and gorillas can be found stalking through the trees.
Scientists classify TSMF into several different types based on their climate. Lowland equatorial evergreen rain forests receive more than 2000 mm of rain annually. These occur in a belt around the equator, including the Amazon and Congo Basins. Tropical seasonal forests are also common. These experience a warm, wet summer and a cooler, dry winter. In these forests, some tree species drop their leaves during the dry season. There are also montane rain forests found in cooler, mountainous regions. 
The sheer scale of life in these forests is staggering. TSMF are home to more species than any other terrestrial ecosystem. Scientists estimate that half of the world's species may live in these forests. In just one square kilometer, there may be more than 1,000 different tree species. Even invertebrates show incredible variety. In New Guinea, you can find stick insects and butterflies that grow over 10 centimeters in length. 
Despite their importance, these ecosystems face significant threats from human activity. Many forests are being cleared to create space for farmland. Others are lost to large-scale commercial logging. The rate of loss is quite high. An area the size of Ireland is destroyed every few years. Currently, rainforests cover less than 6% of the Earth's total land surface. Protecting these regions is a major challenge for global conservation efforts.
