Tropical and subtropical grasslands are special parts of our world. These areas are called biomes. They are mostly covered by grasses or small shrubs. Some places are called savannas when they have scattered trees. These lands are often semi-arid or semi-humid. This means they are not very wet or very dry. They sit in warm parts of the Earth. Most are near the Equator between 5 and 20 degrees.

Rainfall is the main thing that shapes these lands. Most of these areas get between 25 cm and 150 cm of rain each year. The rain can be very seasonal. Sometimes, all the rain for the year falls in just two weeks. This makes drought a very common problem. In the Sudan climate, there is a hot and rainy season. This season starts in May and lasts until September in the Northern Hemisphere. The rest of the year is cool and dry.

Plants have clever ways to survive the dry times. Acacia trees lose their leaves to save moisture. This helps them live when water is hard to find. Baobab trees use a different way to stay hydrated. They store water inside their thick trunks. These plants grow in many different types of soil. In Africa, savannas sit between forests and open grasslands. You might see miombo or mopane habitats there too.

Many large animals live in these warm grasslands. They eat the many plants found there. African savannas have the most diverse groups of animals.
