During the Umayyad period, Tripoli became a major center for shipbuilding. The city also saw a period of great learning under Fatimid rule. However, the Crusaders arrived in the 12th century and entered the city in 1109. This conquest caused great destruction. The famous library, Dar al-'Ilm, or "House of Knowledge," was burned. This loss destroyed thousands of valuable volumes.
