History shows that many kingdoms ruled this land. In the 10th century, Hungarian tribes reached Transylvania. King Stephen I of Hungary made it part of his kingdom in 1002.

Later, a special place called the Principality of Transylvania emerged in 1570. For a while, it was a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire. In 1690, the Habsburg monarchy gained control of the region. After the year 1711, Austrian governors ruled the land.

Political control shifted frequently through the Middle Ages. Hungarian tribes reached and conquered the region in the late 9th century. In the 10th century, the Gyula family ruled the area. King Stephen I of Hungary later asserted his authority. He led an army against his uncle, Gyula III. This made Transylvania part of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1002.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, Saxon colonists settled the northeast. These settlers helped shape the region's unique cultural character.

New political structures emerged during the early modern period. After the Battle of Mohács in 1526, the region belonged to the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom. This led to the creation of the Principality of Transylvania in 1570.

For much of the 16th and 17th centuries, it was a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire. It actually held dual suzerainty under both Ottoman and Habsburg rule.

In 1690, the Habsburg monarchy gained possession of the land. Following the Peace Treaty of Szatmar in 1711, Austrian control was firmly established.

The 19th century brought significant political changes and movements. During the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, the government proclaimed a union with Transylvania. However, the revolution failed. The Austrian March Constitution then declared Transylvania a separate crown land. This status ended with the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. At that time, it was reincorporated into the Kingdom of Hungary.

During this era, Romanians developed a strong sense of national identity. They expressed this through the Transylvanian School and political petitions.

Transylvania eventually became part of Romania after World War I. The National Assembly of Romanians proclaimed this union in 1918. The Treaty of Trianon in 1920 made it official.

There was a brief period of change during World War II. In 1940, Northern Transylvania reverted to Hungary. It was returned to Romania after the war ended.
