The device used four transistors to function. One transistor acted as a mixer-oscillator. Another served as an audio amplifier. The final two acted as intermediate-frequency amplifiers. While the size was popular, the sound quality was often considered poor. Still, sales approached 100,000 units within just one year of its release.
Newer models quickly improved the experience. In February 1955, Raytheon introduced the 8-TP-1. This model featured eight transistors, which greatly improved sound quality. It was also much more efficient with power. The 8-TP-1 cost only 1/6 cent per hour to operate. In contrast, the TR-1 cost 40 times as much to run. This efficiency made the technology much more practical for everyday users.
Japanese companies also played a major role in the global market. Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita of Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation worked to bring this technology to Japan. They secured a licensing fee to use the transistor. In 1955, they released the TR-55 under the new brand name Sony. This was the first transistor radio to use all miniature components. Later, the Sony TR-63 became a massive success. It was introduced to the United States in December 1957. The TR-63 was the first to sell in the millions. It also popularized the nine-volt battery as a standard.
The impact of these devices was enormous. The pocket-sized design changed how people listened to music. People could now take broadcasts anywhere they went. By about 2012, billions of transistor radios had been manufactured. Eventually, newer devices like the Sony Walkman and smartphones began to replace them. These modern tools use digital technology and higher audio quality. However, almost all modern technology still makes use of transistors inside its circuitry. The era of the specific "transistor radio" ended, but the technology remains essential.
